  • Hi ladies, sorry I haven't been online for a couple of days. It sounds as though you are all doing better than me :o

Lindsay, hope everything goes well for you. Let us know how you get on.

I'm going to backtrack a bit to Tuesday. I had a manageable list and some enthusiasm, so I fully expected to acheive a fair amount. I dropped youngest off at school (older son has special needs transport door to door). I had breakfast at Little Chef and then did the shopping. At home I had only just made a coffee and had made a quick phone call, when youngest's school rang. They wanted me to pick him up as apparantly he had been sick (their words, not mine). Ten minutes later, I collected him and could see straight away that he wasn't well. He was clinging onto his right side and was almost in tears. His right testicle was painful too.

Fast forward an hour and we were in A&E. The doctor told me that he didn't have a twisted testicle but may have appendicitis (which had been my concern, based on exactly where the pain was in his side. To cut a long story short, he was admitted but didn't have appendicitis. He had blood in his urine, not visible to the eye, but kidney stones, gall stones, and damage to the abdominal wall muscle were all ruled out over the next 24 hours. I told the staff that he had had blood in his urine a few weeks ago, but the it went away and the doctors weren't sure what had caused it - and was told that this was irrelevant.

They didn't know what was wrong, and because of the total lack of information and poor care, I pushed for him to be discharged last night. At that point, I found out that he had been referred to urology, but no one had told me previously. This is just one example of poor care - there are many more.

I've spent quite a lot of time in Alder Hey over the years, with older son, and their care has always been great. The local hospital was dreadful. I won't ramble on, but the only two good things were the treatment by the ultrasound lady (when we finally got to see her!) and, according to my son, the food :rotfl:.

Today we have seen the GP, as we were given no information about aftercare, follow up appointments, etc. He examined my son, arranged another urine sample (which I would have thought the hospital would have wanted), and dictated a referral to Alder Hey whilst we were in the room. The GP told me that my son had slightly raised white blood cells in his urine, indicating a possible infection. The hospital hadn't mentioned this to me at all. He also said he was concerned that my son had had two incidents of blood in his urine in a very short space of time, hence the referrral to Alder Hey.

The results will be through tomorrow and antibiotics might be prescribed. In the meantime, he is off school, and my house still isn't tidy :p

Today, the washing machine has re-washed the stuff that I left in it on Tuesday. The dishwasher is empty and part refilled. That's all so far though.

My older son stayed at my mum's, as did my daughter. Her work allowed her to finish early and start late on two of her shifts, so that she could help my mum (age 79) with my son. School transport agreed to collect him from mum's, which is round the corner from where we live. On Tuesday, when my daughter was on a late shift and there was nobody else to collect him from his after school club, my friends collected him and took him to their house for tea, until my daughter's boyfriend was able to pick him up and deliver him to Mum (mum doesn't drive and it's very poor public transport to the school from where we live).

So, untidy house, poorly son, but brilliant family, friends, and GP :)

Tomorrow is another day............ and the housework will still be waiting :rotfl:

The situation with my son, or my disorganised, untidy home? :p

Thanks Teenie. I'm just happy to have a great GP who is really supportive. My other son has some rare conditions and I remember the same doctor telling me that he had researched his conditions, as they had never had a child with them as a patient in the surgery before.
  • Kingfisher blue hope all is well when the results come back in,

Thanks chocolatebum. Even if the results are clear, we still have a referral to urology at Alder Hey. I'm very happy with that because when blood isn't visible in the urine, you don't know it's there unless you have a sample tested. We know of two occasions when he has had blood in his urine, both recent, but we don't know if it has occurred before, how often, or why it has happened. At least further tests will hopefully shed some light and reassure me :). My son is a worrier, so his peace of mind is important too.

Glad you have a good gp though, it makes all he difference. We have a good one too thank goodness!!
