You could be a below average driver and still travel along a wide motorway at 96mph with very little risk. Sometimes you need to look at the complete picture. In my day to day life I'm more concerned about someone with their mind off the job hammering through a residential area 30 limit at 42mph than I am about cars travelling at 96mph on the motorway.

Thanks to all of you who have offered helpful advice.

I feel the thread has gone off on a tangent with the conscience of the nation brigade taking the moral high ground.

I always thought it was he who was without sin that casts the first stone but obviously we are now a nation of saints devoid of any sinners (apart from myself and a few other wayward souls).

I think the point that you are failing miserably to see is that YOU ARE LEGALLY IN THE WRONG!! I (for one) am not condeming you for it but for b1tching about getting caught!!

By pointing that out does not mean we make every day a *sunday driving* day and hail Driving Miss Daisy as our hero!!

In my experience sinning is waaaaaaay more fun than stone throwing

Silly me! I thought this was MSE

How can you justify financially (never mind legal/safety/environmental aspects) driving well in excess of the speed limit? Doesn't it cost a lot more in fuel if your foot is pressed to the floor? Hmmm

    S.x

Cottoned on to MSE end July06 - I have seen the light!!!
[blah blah blah} the thing is, if I'm so b***dy brilliant, why am I still broke?

Shall we start a competition - what is the fastest you've ever been on British roads? That will really get some people would up!

I'll set the ball rolling with 130mph on the M50 in good weather, and not another car in sight.

145 down the A6 cutting north of Luton, that was the “newish car, see how fast it will go” test.

I failed the test as I gave up before the car did, things happen very quickly at those sorts of speeds, an absolute no-no if there are any other cars at all about

Nope. My old bike, an old fashioned carburettor type, was more efficient at full throttle. Then there is also the effect of stop / start traffic and the waste due to acceleration after every slow down - keeping a constant speed burns less fuel.

    And your message is?

Exactly what I said - 29.5 mph in a 30 mph limit is appropriate in some cases and not in others,. People need to engage brain when driving

dont the police have anything better to do !!!!!!, 96 on a motorway is nothing, most trafic these days usually sits at 80 on clear days.

Imagine that car travelling at 96 mph hitting you.

I've no time for the dibble. BUT when people say 'have they nothing better to do' it irks me. THESE ARE TRAFFIC COPS. Trained to deal with matters relating to traffic. NOT your local beat bobby out catching criminals.
This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down
