so what is wrong in doing 100mph on a clear motorway?

NOTHING, even a modern Fiesta will happliy pootle along doing a ton.
Technology in Tyres, suspensions brakes and handling have all improved over the many years since the current limits were applied.
After a recommendation on here, I test drove a honda at the weekend, that easily could do 100PMH in third !!, Now just working out where I can build a garage to house the thing.

One of my cars will do 110mph in second. It doesn't though.
Technology has improved massively in the last 40 years but, until the same can be said about driving standards and attitudes, there will still be a need for speed limits.
    Can I help?

thats great news - so the faster we go the less likely we are to die.
Just need to let all these people know that keep going on about somebody walking in front of the car with a flag.

Please get real - the speed limit came in over 40 years ago now & the cars in them days were on the edge at that sort of speed whereas cars to day are quite capable of doing 120mph or more - so what is wrong in doing 100mph on a clear motorway?

I think it is illegal, so that would make it wrong.

Does anyone have first hand experience of what the latest penalties are for 96mph in a 70mph on the motorway? M876 in Central Scotland.

    Thanks

I was recently clocked at 92mph on motorway coming back from Glasgow. Result was £60 & 3 points. If your speedo read 96mph, you will likely be clocked at similar.

    Hope that helps

Not necessarily. ACPO guidelines are set at 93mph. Anytihng above that and you could be looking at a harsher punishment.

This post inspires me...You know the "post of the month" thing...maybe we should have nominations for "yawn of the month" too...Given, each month, to the most dull, predictable, unhelpful, PC nonsense posted hereabouts.

No idea what you said at the start of the thing, but I think "rape, murder, burglary" - are the "better things" the police should be doing...

If someone's a graffiti artist and they're not hurting anyone...what's the problem?
If someone's drunk or a junky and not hurting anyone...what's the problem?
If someone's a vandal or an abusive teenager, by definition it seems they *probably* are hurting someone, but even so, if they're not...what's the problem?

The thing is...The OP, whether you like it or not, didn't *actually* hurt someone by driving at that speed (and really isn't likely to anyway)...people who've been about raping, murdering, vandalising, beating, stealing, etcetc...all have *actually* hurt someone...

Still, I might slow down after reading this thread. I never realised you could get into trouble for doing 96, I'd have thought the standard 3 points/£60...Learn something new every day :)
Ah I see the light, they should only be penalised AFTER they kill someone, silly me.

Well if your in a 30 mph zone I'd say 29.5mph would be appropriate depending on the situation, for example in close proximity to a school I would say wholly inappropriate, you see I have children that walk along pavements and attend school and would rather they arrived home unharmed than have to go collect them at casualty or worse still their belongings.

    Wise words, mate ;)

When you say you were doing 96mph do you mean that that was what your speedo said? If so you were probably doing around 87.

To actually achieve a prosecution for doing 96 the indicated speed would be well over 100mph. And getting caught reveals a lack of awareness of surroundings.

yes its what my speedo said, i might have done over 100mph but not sure, it is frightening going at that speed,

Speeding in residential areas etc is anti-social, dangerous and frankly people deserve everything they get speeding there (and more).

Speeding on motorways carries less risk to pedestrians etc. In good weather the 70mph speed limit is too low, I'm sure it is being kept at this level to keep the level of speeding fine revenue. The drive to target motorway speeders and changes to law to further punish motorway drivers for speeding (eg prison is now an option for those doing 100+mph) is wrongly targeting people. Also faster moving motorways would get traffic through faster and have an impact on reducing congestion. So getting people moving a little faster would be a benefit to most people!

I read the thread title '96mph on Motorway likely consequences?' and thought - getting to your destination faster!

Incidently Speeding is not a criminal offence (but a civil one like a parking ticket)...

And for your 96mph on a motorway I hope you find a good solicitor and find a technicality which gets you off!
