As you are well aware at just 13 your daughter is a minor, still very much a child. She is also 3 years below the age of consent.

If he's in a position of trust, she's FIVE years under the age of consent:

I think the OP should certainly think long and hard before considering this young man a predator and reporting him to the Police. Any caution even would be on his record permanently and will show on an Enhanced Disclosure or CRB barring him from a number of jobs including any security related, prison related and military.

If the OPs daughter put a kiss on facebook, she was happy for the world to know and IMO she got a bit out of her depth and is now embarassed and realises she may have made an error of judgement.

I am all for protecting our children but feel teenagers will be teenagers even with a 4 year gap.

There's the law and then there's biology.

Remembering the pack of sexual energy I was at 17, if she looked old enough, I rarely gave the age much of a thought.

You probably weren't at risk of being put on a sex offenders register back in the day either.

If a 17yo can't understand that he shouldn't be let out.

Well no she isn't five, or even FIVE, years under the age of consent, at least if arithmatic is the same as when I was at school. Lets work it out, on her next birthday she will be 14, then she will be two years under the age of consent. We don't know when her birthday is so if it was yesterday she is nearly 3 years under the age of consent, if she is 14 tomorrow I think we can settle on two. He isn't a "real" corporal he is another kid at cadets and I don't think the Police would treat him like a teacher or other professional working with kids, at least they wouldn't when I worked for them.

If you look at the quote - "In the United Kingdom, the Sexual Offences Act 2000 prohibits a person in a position of trust from having sexual acts with someone who cannot consent which include minors and "very vulnerable people".[1] This is primarily used for the protection of young people who are above the age of consent but under the age of 18, or those with mental disabilities."

I must admit this is where I'm confused as to why people think he's in a position of trust.

  • Hi

I was in the cadets for years. Cpl not position of power as such, tend to get it when u have been there long enough. There is lots of dating and sometimes it is between younger girls and older lads. If the incident didn't occur on squadron premises then unfortunately there is not much the cadets can do as they are only responsible for what occurs on squadron grounds. However I would ask for an appointment with the co to discuss it directly with him/her. I would make your concerns clear and ask that the over 16 on unit are reminded about age of consent ect.

I guess then it comes down to whether this young man is in a position of trust......

Hes basically a helper at the Cadets, I don't believe he is actually in a position of power (yes the girls may look up to him like they would a 6th year at school but an actual position of trust?)

What on earth is going on in this thread?! Defending a 17 year old in a position of authority who messed around with a 13 year old when she's admitted she didn't like it?! Implying she's making it up because she's a drama queen? Advising not to report him to the police in case he gets in trouble? Are you people freaking kidding me?!

This is exactly how sex offenders get away with abuse. He's 17, quite old enough to know he shouldn't be fiddling about with little kids! I'm sorry but saying that he can't control his urges because he's a teenager is utter bull. Maybe he shouldn't be working with young girls if he finds it so hard to control himself.
