'sick to the stomach' is hardly the comment of a supportive parent.

'Sick to the stomach' is a comment from a mother who does not know what the world will hold for her son if he turns out to be gay. She has no experience of coming out, she does not know what obstacles he will face or if things will be harder for him. If that does not make a mother sick to the stomach then she's a pretty poor mother.

Do you have any experience of this valli?
  • Thanks guys for your support.

Macca , sassy and dippy - you have all understood what I was trying to say. There are many others who have been supportive and equally so many who just seem to want to stomp on me even more. This thread has been a bit like a scab that you can't help picking. The supportive threads have really helped

I spent some time earlier and went in several sites for LBGT, several of them featured parents and their stories when their children came out. I was amazed as many of them used the same words as me, initial shock, grief, devastation, so I guess I am not the only parent to react like this. (Admittedly my son himself does not appear to know how to categorise himself and he may decide that is not the path he wants to take). If it is then we will be there to support him in any way we can.

Thank you again to the kind people who have supported me.

My mums reaction was very similar to yours troubled mum. She had alot of questions that mainly had to do with what the future would hold for me. Alot of worry and concern. But its like everything else. You take it as it comes.

joke aside, being gay gave me a lot of opportunity that I wouldn't have if I were to be straight !

Not directly personally, (although a relative is gay) though, interestingly, my son is the same age as the OPs. I had assumed, from the title of the thread, that the OPs son was much younger. Were it happening to me I would not be sick to the stomach but I would worry - but that's a mother's job whatever lifestyle choices a child makes, or how that child 'fits in' with society, be it gay, straight or bi. I am NOT implying that one's sexuality is a lifestyle choice - but other things, such as career choices or 'recreational' behaviour, are.
But back to the OPs son - he will face far fewer obstacles, and much less censure, than he would have 30 years ago, though. :T Good to know he WILL have the support of his family.

  • The only downside to a gay relationship is - you won`t have children . The only downside to getting drunk too much and being promiscuous is - you might turn into an alcoholic carrying a STD !

Troubled Mum if you think it's quite ok to post what other people have posted on other websites about their relationships, you need to hunt around for your manners.

OP, why have you only posted responses where the parents are "devastated" ? Do they make you feel better about how you feel ?

I got the impression she's trying to justify her overreaction by saying there's worse parents out there :/ Doesn't sit right with me at all.
