'erm, at the risk of being slammed for being some sort of luddite and maybe speaking for some  folk who also are not into rooting and goodness knows what else (rooting used to mean something quite different when I were a lad!) can any ordinary mortal pass a comment re the value this 'phone offers for everyday users. Seems to me that I am reading both here and elsewhere of maybe an increasing number of problems from blobbing onwards and, given that this forum is about saving money and not a techie helpdesk does the Huawei g300 represent decent value for money in the real world or is there better value to be found elsewhere?

Outside of Modaco there have been few people mentioning the blob problem and therefore its likely either a batch problem or people needing to careful ie keep phone in their pocket etc.

To be honest most phones will have some sort of problem ie some Iphones constantly restoring during calls, running up massive data bills etc.

I have had the G300 since Monday and its not rooted and still running GB. I doubt there is much better out there for between £70-£100 especially for those who want it for internet use and downloading a few apps. It seems easily better for my needs than the 3gs I previously had and the Sony x10 mini which is about the same price.

The only issue I have had so far is that you can't change the voicemail settings to another providers so I have to manually dial 901 for O2 voicemail.

Its a wonderful phone for the price and I can't see how my sister can justify the £350 she spent on her Galaxy S2 when this is every bit as good at £70.

The only problem I can see with mine is that when using texts the dictionary underlines each word to suggest an incorrect spelling even when correct. Not a big deal I just ignore it and it works fine.

Absolute bargain if you ask me :D

Can you not use a keyboard like Swype/SwiftKey to get around the dictionary problem?

Apart from being able to fix the dictionary are there any other advantages to rooting the phone?

I'm toying with rooting but wonder if its worth it as I'm very happy as it is running the 940 build of ICS that sillygoose listed above.

I can't say I've had a problem with the dictionary,I'm not typing essays lol

    Other advantages of rooting ?
Well certain apps won't run unless they get root access, the firewall in Avast being one and adblocker apps being another....I'm sure there's lots more too.

It only takes 5 minutes to do if you follow my earlier link

I tried this and the rootg300 command box reported that the disc was full and didn't root.

I tried resetting my phone but still the same result.

Do I need to try something else to root the phone/

I'm currently on the 940v of ICS.

Edit; going to try again with full erase of sd card...

Post 709 method worked on my V940.

The problem is its a bit tight on allocated space over on the secure side in the system apps folder, especially as they put like the Chrome browser and youtube viewer apps in there.

That was a bit daft as these apps get updated from the market regularly - but the copy on the secure side won't be (because its secure!) so Android installs the updated copy on the normal side and 'ignores' the app on the secure side so it sits wasting space.

Now rooting is basically tricking the phone to get the superuser app over the secure fence into the secure system app folder.

Once over there it acts on your behalf and lets you do things over the secure side.

So the root utilities are trying to copy some superuser software (and other stuff) but there is not enough space over there, wasn't even enough room for the correct dictionary files without getting rid of some stuff.

So... once you get some sort of root going, you can use ES File Explorer to simply delete the Chrome App, that frees 4.5mb to start with! You can easily reinstall it from Google to normal memory, its probably not even using the secure side one anyway if you have done an update! (and its crud these days on android anyway so who needs it)

Once there is a bit of space you can fix the dictionary, update superuser so its the right versions and even install apps as your own system apps.

You can fix the dictionary without rooting - I did - but you have to install ADB that can write to the database then you can run the dicfix patch

It actually removed my keyboard altogether so I installed ICS keyboard and voila - dictionary worked - but whilst I attribute the fix to the patch it may have been the keyboard came with a dictionary so give it a try just installing a new keyboard 1st
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

We put 'perfect keyboard (free)' on, and that seems to have fixed the dictionary problem. :)

I've tried the ICS and Perfect keyboards and neither has the built in dictionary on my version of ICS. It does allow me to add to my own personal dictionary as I go along. Not perfect but its not as if I'm sitting around tecting all day.

I've taken a look at installing the ADB patch but its very complicated and I got lost along the way.

Do you have any tips on installing ADB, how did it go for you?
