Just got mine back today from Very's repair service 12 days from posting it in. The letter informs that they have replaced the circuit board and installed the 'latest' software that appears to be 4.0.3, Baseband version 2030. I have been supplied with a new IMEI # and pleased to say the phone remains unlocked (from my ebay unlock code) and my Virgin sim worked straight away although the settings>about phone>operator and country say it is still Vodaphone. It has however reverted to the low volume problem and isn't resolved using Sillygooses tips above. My previous attempts to root proved unsuccessful, would it be wise to attempt to root it now the phone has been refurbished?

Not sure how rooting can help you, strange about the ringtone, some of the ones I tried putting on myself are strangely quiet but the factory Huawei one makes me jump its so loud!

Yeah, I can't work it out. I've tried several now including your suggestions above. A friend sent me the Huewai Ring Ring tone (the one that sounds like an old fashioned landline) that he has boosted the volume on, this is the loudest but is very tinny and harsh on the ear. The new software build is B960, which is more recent than my previous one, perhaps it's that?
Volume issues aside, in your opinion would you say it is worth the bother/risk to attempt another rooting? Many thanks for your tips and input SG.

Well I don't know of any effective hacks for the volume issue so I don't think rooting would help there. The only other main thing is does the spell checker work OK on B960? not red underlining correctly spelt words as well as incorrectly when you type? if its working OK then thats another one gone.

The only other thing that comes to mind for rooting is it lets you use an advert blocker helps reduce adverts on games and other 'free' apps you install. Its only ever partially successful and if it doesn't bother you then thats another gone..

So no, i wouldn't bother rooting unless you actually come across some issue you can't solve any other way, the upside of not routing is your phone is a little bit more secure.

Was the ringtone you tried 'Huawei_Tune.ogg' ? have you tried playing it via just the phones music player (such as Google Music) is it still quiet? I am curious now if its just ringing low or your phones audio is low too (on mine it plays as loud as it rings if I turn the Player volume up)

Try the various LOUD ring tones available for free download on the Zedge App. Add one of these to the TuneQ app 9again free), crank the graphic equaliser up and cover your ears!:D

Upgraded to Official ICS version 952 here

Dead easy to install and even comes with instruction

Now you had it a while could you give a review, especially is it any better than the velcom (940) one, and did the spellcheck problem return (assuming you fixed it previously) when you upgraded?

As far I can make out the spell checker 'appears' to be resolved. I say 'appears' as I've tried it in both the stock messaging app and also the third party sms app I use for my texts for my texts (pansi sms).
With regard to the ringtone volume, I have only used the Huawei tone you suggested via settings>sound>phone ringtone. I've looked but have had some difficulty locating the 'Huawei_Tune.ogg' via the file manager to test it independently on my music player (poweramp).
