So I need to phone up for a DRN before putting a request in writing to cancel the contract. And then do I need to ask for a PAC during the same call or do I wait until the last few days before disconnection?!

They really don't make it simple.

Also, am I correct in my understanding that O2 contracts will now charge for 08 numbers, but CPW O2 (who I am with) will still offer inclusive 0845/0870 numbers on new contracts but not 0844/0871?

No, you canot ask for a PAC now because PAC's only have a limited life, ie 20 or 30 days I think. So wait until you are ready to port.

02, according to CPW's site is not currently allowing calls to numbers starting 08 within the bundled minutes. Mobilejunkie on here, says otherwise.

mobilejunkie will go mad if he sees this :)

In short, no they won't charge you for 0808/0800/0845/0870 numbers.

Do I need to time the porting for exactly the day of my disconnection?
What happens if the "port" is a few days early or late? I guess the new network will take a few days to process the port.

I'm probably porting to T-mob PAYG.

It's a bit tricky, a hit and miss affair. PAC's last for 30 days, so 30 days before your contract ends you should obtain the PAC. Then you need to time your PAYG purchase as close to the end as you can. I think the request for the PAC signals to the network that you will quit. But if the PAC is not taken by the new network within 30 days, then the PAC expires. Be careful here because it is not unknown for a PAC to expire and the contract to continue.

Okay, so I have just sent off a letter (recorded delivery) to cancel - contract expires next month - 18th August I think? Two questions I have....

CPW Retentions phoned me today (for 2nd time) to tempt me to stay with them. Told them I could get a better deal than they were offering and they couldn't match it. So I said I was going to cancel and go my own way. I asked if I need a reference number - he said "NO" - just send a letter to cancel. Being thick - I forgot to ask for address D'Oh! So I got it off MSE. I wondered what my chances of getting it cancelled without a DRN I have been reading about.....?

Secondly, cause I will roll into my 13th month - will I be charged a full month or is it PRO RATA at it was when I joined up - i.e. paid part of month plus full month in first bill.

    Thanks

    Jz

You will be charged for 30 days after they say they have received your cancellation notice.

Interesting about the DRN. I phoned them today and they said I wouldn't need one when I get to end of contract. They said, simply call us 30 days prior. I'm not so sure about that. There's nowt in the terms and conditions about the cancel process. So, I guess since there's nothing written, other than 30 days notice is required, that they could not enforce the DRN.
