RBS Group has told Sky News that the technical glitch affecting NatWest and RBS (LSE: RBS.L - news) accounts will not be resolved until Monday at the earliest.
As a result, the banks plan on opening branches for an extended period on Saturday and also on Sunday.
NatWest said: "Over 1,000 of our branches will be open until 7pm tonight to help customers with enquiries or who need access to their cash.
"In addition, our branches open on Saturday will extend working hours to 6pm, and these branches will also be open this Sunday from 9am to 12pm."
Susan Allen, Director of Operations at RBS Group told Sky News that the problem was sparked by a software failure.
"We know that a system outage on Tuesday caused this backlog," the bank said in a statement.
"While that outage has been resolved, the backlog itself is now the problem and RBS is working around the clock to resolve this."
The glitch is believed to have affected online balance facilities and credit updates into the accounts of up to 12 million customers at NatWest.
On Friday morning RBS Group tweeted: "Unfortunately we are once again experiencing technical issues with our systems and account balances have not updated properly overnight.
"This means where money has gone into a customers' account, there may be a delay in it appearing on their balance."
"We also recognise this is an unacceptable inconvenience for which we apologise."
NatWest said that no customers "would be left out of pocket because of the technical problems we have experienced" and encouraged account holders to contact customer services.
Nicola Lindsay, 40, told Sky News: "I'm absolutely disgusted with NatWest customer service as they told me branches in Manchester city centre would be open early.
"I got the bus in to find none of them open and it was absolutely teeming down.
"I contacted customer services again and after 15 minutes of waiting on hold, I was told they didn't know which branches would be open.
"The staff in the branch were very helpful but I am now worried about what will happen to my mortgage payment next week."
On Thursday afternoon, RBS expected the fault to be fixed within two hours but later hinted that the problem could continue for an extended period.
Announcing the decision to extend branch hours, it tweeted: "This is to give our customers who need access to cash in advance of the weekend."
    Onwards and Upwards ;)

There was a message on online banking last week stating that they were making some changes to online banking this week

    "Welcome to online banking
Date of last log in:3:10 P.M. Friday 22 June 2012 (UK time)
If you need any help using online banking, you may find our 'Help' service useful. "

The welcome page will no longer be shown and the page containing account balances will be presented immediately after login

Does anyone remember that message ?

Also Monday's payments were late appearing over the weekend about a fortnight ago

The "chat now" pop up message has been making unsolicited appearances during the last few days

So there have been a few glitches recently as a result of recent planned technical changes at the bank

I am still unable to make payments from my account a 1530

Faster payments into the account seem to be working and I withdrew cash from an ATM without difficulty

I did a transfer from my ING Direct account into my Natwest account about 30 minutes ago and it has appeared in my Natwest account now, so I am assuming that new transactions are fixed.

Is that money actually cleared and available? The only reason I ask is that I have transactions listed that are included in my account balance, but which are still not available funds.

I was able to withdraw some cash from my branch today, as they said it was showing on their internal system.
Still not showing on my OLB though.

I noticed this on the BBC : "The technical fault did not affect people who had pre-existing sums of money in their accounts yesterday. The banks' ATM machines are still working and branches remain open."

Also noticed that some people say they can access their money....are all the people being affected in their overdraft or have an empty balance?

It's all wel and good that the problem is supposedly fixed and new transactions are wortking or you can go into branches of Natwest and RBS to draw out cash, But what about the rest of us? The ones who don't have a natwest or RBS account who are waiting for wages from Natwest to go into our accounts? No one is opening up late and on Sat and Sunday to hand us out cash!

What exactly are Natwest going to do for us? They need to do something!

I just called the Clydesdale bank as my husbands wages have also been affected. I asked if we would be charged for this as direct debits and standing orders have been paid resulting in my account going overdrawn. The guy said that we would be charged and that we would have to tell the employer and they would have to put a claim through RBS because Natwest/RBS would return these fees.

Can they do this when it is the banking system at fault and not that of our own?

I phoned around some of my direct debits to question what will happen if they're unable to take the funds.

They explained they will try again and if not I have 7 days to make a payment. I also questioned about paying by credit card if the worst came to the worst and NatWest didn't pay me... they said normally they don't allow to pay a debt with a debt but as this was a special case I could do so. Of course, I rather pay as a last resort - so seeing what happens.

All my DD's have had a note added. Puts me at ease a little bit. :)

I would advise phoning up and seeing what they can do. They couldn't reschedule my direct debits as they're already being processed.
