I understand. I am just comparing with Google Maps though, where the traffic information is free. I would be surprised if iPhone users had to pay?

The data has to be collated and hence where the subscription arises, I'm sure there will be limited traffic info, but a lot of that is obvious eg M25 slow traffic, M6 Midlands slow traffic, major corridors and smaller roads within towns and cities are often subscription :o

I hadn't realised that users would need to subscribe to Live services on iPhones - are you sure about that?

Good point mate, my reasoning goes like this. :)

The promo for Apple states that live traffic will be included with the sat-nav package.
This "live" TT service is currently charged, and will still have to be paid for by someone.
After a certain time, even basic map updates cost, unless you're willing to go a little bit open-source.

I don't believe iPhone users will have to sign a contract with Tomtom per-se, or pay any more than the already high cost of the handset (and often, the accompanying contract as laid out by the carrier & Apple together).

But TomTom the company will obviously be getting payment from apple in return for using TT's live services on it's handsets and map updates with every future iOS update; sort of like how OEMs pay to have a version of Windows on it's machines, but less than a consumer would pay if they walked into a shop & bought a copy.
It's a business after all, and Tomtom won't be supplying it's service to Apple just for the extra publicity - And business being what it is, the costs will be passed along somewhere.

That makes sense and I think you are right.

Yes it's correct, the cost need to paid somehow regardless of who made the product. I think it's a right move for Apple to use Tomtom well known brand who also owns the mapping company as well. Unlike others Tomtom have managed to build the brand and invest money.
This will add value to Apple products and it's users. This make the product range little stronger then others.

Many satnav apps are available for iPhone some for free with off line maps as well so iPhone users so far have not lost out on this function.

However it's a first to include branded maps by Tomtom for free.

It's worth upgrade to ios 6 just for the satnav, all other function are extra.

Others have built a brand and a strong brand too, now you are starting to understand why others like their chosen product choice so much, some could not wait for iOS6 and upgraded to other OS long ago :p

This reminds me of the copy and paste innovation apple introduced to the iphone a couple of years ago. It was even featured on a advert or 20.

Android was able to do it years previously.

The 'innovations' are unique only to Apple products which lacked them previously, of course people should still choose and buy the products, it's just amusing when some posters are obviously blinded by the hype and preach everything they can using the competitor search engine to dig out all sorts of misinformation to broadcast :rotfl:

...And I wonder why the said person will not answer to that? :rotfl:
He claims to also have an android device, not sure why he is so angered by other OS and hardware, it is not as if it affects him (not directly anyway) other than losing bragging rights ;)

Especially since what he says about google is easily attributed to apple as well!
