Now that is quite likely I think to be at the root of many users problems. I don't use AVG, Norton, or McAfee. And anyone who has installed more than one AV and failed to remove the earlier AV first is likely to have problems I think.

I have avast on one pc and nothing at all on another (I dont use this one too often and never got around to getting stuff on it again after reformatting it.). Same issues on both.

There is obviously an inherent problem, although I suspect that the forum also generally needs slimming down - there is too much extraneous junk. Bells and whistles have to be paid for in terms of speed.

I also wonder if something may have recently been put onto MSE that is provoking AV programs. I don't mean deliberate malware or the like, but perhaps an external link that also has to be scanned before the page will be allowed to load.
I agree it could be other things not part of core site that are being loaded or scanned by antivirus software.

For example, Ebay has been very slow to load for me, I disabled my Antivirus & Microsoft Defender software & it is now much faster.

I wish that Browsers could allow you to monitor & stop loads of external things which slowdown loading of web pages, things not part of core site like adverts, information, which are often supplied from elsewhere like ad suppliers.

Ps: I've switched to Chrome browser as MSE loading had become tediously slow & a nightmare.

So how does that explain the fact that up until the forum changes I had no speed problems or issues with the site, nothing has changed on either of my computers, same AV (Kaspersky) that I have used for years yet suddenly the forums have slowed to a crawl and this is the only site of the many I use that this is happening on.

may be this is one of the suspects ^ or may be some software / downloads interfering with the site

I have an interest in this thread because I'd like to download ie9 at some point because it has something called java inbuilt which might make surfing other sites smoother.

arrrrggghhh! It's driving me nuts all this slowness and pages hanging interminably. Isn't there anything being done about it?

If it doesn't get fixed soon, I'm going to be calling it a day here as there is no point waiting around for pages to load that take forever and ever - frankly, chaps, it is UNUSABLE as it is

the forum homepage still opened inside a second or two. Is that too long or are you guys experiencing much worse?

Much, much longer and very often not even loading at all, just stays trying to load forever (until I lose patience and shut the wretched thing down!)

This is on Firefox as I previously said so it's not just IE! It isn't a browser issue. It isn't individual PC configuration issues either, it's the site itself. I have no such problems on any other site at all.

(8GB RAM here BTW. Firefox 11.0)

Reading back through the thread it seems that it does not matter what browser/anti-virus/windows version you use.

I'm trying out a new browser (Rockmelt) and I'm having far less problems than I ever had with IE, FF and Chrome.

    • Browser client and version - IE8
    • Operating system - Windows XP pro
    • Antivirus - Norton
    • Broadband provider and speed - Virgin 10mb fibre optic cable service
    • Location - KY7
    • time of issue - all the time
    • Is the problem consistent or intermittent? - consistent
    • How does it manifest itself? - Pages on the main forum index take up to 8/10 seconds to load and this includes clicking on a link or using the browser back/forward buttons. When I click on the first post of a thread or any post on the first page of the thread it takes up to 14/16 seconds to load. If it is a subsequent page of a thread it is slightly quicker at 12/15 seconds to load.
I have noted that the lag showing the page header is back when I use the browser back button before it jumps to wherever I was on the page and occasionally the page stalls slightly before the side bar loads.
There also seems to be an effect on the delay if the thread has a lot of smilies posted but usually the last thing to load is the g+1 button on the bookmarks toolbar.

As others have said in this thread, if I beef up the browser security, the pages load a lot quicker but I lose some of the functions.

The only comparable sites for slowness of loading are the link heavy baseball sites of MLB.com and yahoo fantasy baseball.
