cleaning the oven

I've been putting off cleaning the bottom of my oven for months now but as I have recently changed my hours to a 4 day week -today off - & inspired by the FlyLady Thread I decided to bite the bullet & get the job done:eek:
earlier I had the oven on low to season my yorkie tin which claims to be non stick but isnt really anymore - so while it was warm I sprayed the thick black gunk on the oven bottom with diluted Stardrops to soften it.:D
about hour later ie some wahing up, washing, putting the BM on etc (anything to put it off) I decided to give it a go before I had to nip to the shop. The reasoning being that if I needed a wallpaper scraper or industrial cleaner I could take a break to go get it:D
I started by giving it another spray & then started to scrape the looser bits of with a wooden spatula (I didnt want to use a plastic one that would flex) ''ohhh'' I thought ''it has grooves in it!''now that was a suprise as I had been given this cooker 2nd hand & even when I got it the oven bottom had a layer of 'bottom of the oven stuff' on it & to be honest the oven bottom isnt an area I take minute detail in:rotfl:
Then I found layers of the gunk coming off bit like stripping wall paper, so switching to neat Stardrops I continiued to scrape.....
OHH MY...... my oven has a non-stick bottom in a very fetching dark speckled grey! a gentle (ok as hard as I could) scrub with a non-stick scouring pad & HEY PRESTO my bottom is sparkling!:T
I am so glad I didnt reach for a metal scaper or harsh oven cleaners - ok so my hands are a bit dry & sore from the stardrops & the VERY hot water I soaked the shelves in but it looks soooo much better & I didnt ruin it or poison the dog either:A - I'm having a small lunch time glass of wine to pat my self on the back!I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0 -
Well done.................want to clean mine ????..........................lol
Well OH normally does is and he got so far then didn't know what to do..........the fan doesn't work straight away when its first switched on - I thought, terrific.............ovens broke ! Anyway he sprayed it with some de-greasing stuff and whacked it on high and that seemed to do the trick. Once it had preheated the fan was working ok.
So, we've been doing that every day. Bit of a pain but we'll get there..........when I say 'we' I really mean OH..............lol
Tried it out again this morning just to see if it still blasts out with the fan on and it does.............once its given a little while.
Being head chef this week and having pizza to shove in for one of the boys plus doing chicken portions with roast veg for me and OH I don't want it all to go wrong.
My effort with my pie and roast potatoes the other night was awful.........I was assuming the fan was working and it wasn't.............dinner seemed to take an age and I got in right flap.......................lol
I'll start it early tonight ..............just in case. I think OH says about 40 minutes for chicken and roast veg but if I allow an hour I'll feel safer...........I thinkMary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

i am having a bit of a clean/reorganise/declutter at the moment and the time has arrived to tackle my oven . i have read alot on here about making a paste out of bicarb and either washing up liquid, water or vinegar, which is the best and roughly how long will it take, do i leave it on for a while, if so will reorganise a few cupboards while waiting (only 3 cupboards left to do!!)
my dad always uses oven pride but as i am not leaving the house today and i have no money want to uses the cheapest possible method
any advice gratefully accepted thanks0 -

I have recently sold my house and will obviously giving it a thorough scrub before the new owners move in so was hoping someone could recommend a fab oven cleaner.
I clean my oven often but I want it to sparkle and look like new (like it did 18 months ago when it was new!). I have been having a little nose on the internet and quite like the look of Mr Muscle oven cleaner but its nearly a fiver! Before I splash out on it, have any of you used it and is it any good?!
If any of you can recommend anything else then that would be great - ideally I need the 'lazy persons' cleaner like a foam or something that I can spray on and leave - not because I am lazy but so I can spray the oven and go and blitz other rooms and then come back to the oven and wipe rather than be scrubbing for 3 hours!0 -
Use OVEN PRIDE , about the same price, but it works:j
Comes in a orange/blue box from all big supermarkets,
Inside box is also a VERY large plastic bag, pop in all the racks
take into garden , pour some of liquid in bag, seal bag.
Flip bag every 30 mins
then hose off.
Use rest of liquid on oven, leave and return.
Liquid is more like a runny gel , so will stick and work
good luck0 -
Second vote for Oven Pride. The Mr Muscle stuff stinks and is very drippy - I sprayed it on, left it and came back to what looked like a huge pool of black treacle on the floor ... It was also a real pain to get off, and make the oven reek for a good week. Oven Pride's a bit dearer, I think, but it's so much easier.0
