cleaning the oven

  • On the glass oven door bit I use a paint scraper, the type that takes Stanley knife blades, to scrape all the carbon off. Then I use whatever is to hand: soda crystals, soapy water, ajax etc. I have got a pack of those oven bag things but never used them! Ive heard that you can put a pyrex bowl with water and a lemon in the oven and let it boil away for a couple of hours (watch for it drying). The steam is supposed to lift the grease. Then you wash it off. I havent tried this though.

I know someone who used to buy ammonia for this purpose but I dont know how you use it and Ive avoided it cos Im asthmatic!
  • White streaks on the glass door below the removeable panel?

No idea what caused them but can't seem to shift them either! Each time the door dries they come back - tried bicarb, bleach, vinegar, cif oven cleaner?

Have lovely sparkly clean oven but door streaks look awful and are "getting" to me,

    thanks

    Moam
Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.... life is a WIP.

Have you tried something like Astonish paste?

I get those streaks too - really annoying as I don't know what causes them either...

Anyway, I make a thick paste of bicarb and washing up liquid, take out the glass and give it a good scrub. The paste works really well, wipe it down with some water (or run under the tap) and dry with kitchen towel. The paste seems to keep well, so don't worry if you make too much.

You might find (like me) that the streaks don't reappear for a while.

Well if you think Mr Muscle is bad you should try Betterware Carbon Remover. It does a fantastic job and I wouldn't use anything else but if it doesn't burn the skin off your hands first (Marigolds are recommended) the fumes will get you.
  • I tend to use sugar soap for my hob and oven door.. it really is brilliant at cutting through grease... and rinsed off really easily unlike oven cleaners which tend to leave one hell of a residue... funny i never considered actually using it *within* the oven just on the inside of the door and on the grill pans etc :o I'm sure it would be fine though... might try it now.. anyone know of any reason why it would be unsafe or anything? Can't be any worse than most oven cleaners!

Hope that helps you any... :)

Just discussing cleaning ovens with OH..........its normally his job (I can't bend much due to back trouble) and its in desparate need of a clean.
His boss's wife uses caustic soda !!! I thought this sounded like a recipe for disaster but he says she's got a container she puts the caustic soda in, adds boiling water then takes out the removable parts of the oven, dips them in (hardwearing gloves on) leaves them for a good soak, rinses them off and they come up really well. I wouldn't want OH to try it myself but wondered if anyone else had

My oven is minging to. I really hate cleaning it. But have discovered thanks to this board that soaking the racks and grill pan in a bath full of very hot water and soda crystals works a treat. Burnt on stuff just wipes off.

As for the oven itself I use Cilit Bang as Mr Muscle chokes me to death too.
That with a lot of elbow grease and a metal scouerer does the trick. Trouble is I never ever get it totally sparkling cos I end up with arm ache.

I read somewhere - You put a bowl of white vinegar in a cold oven, heat it up to it's hottest temperature and then switch off. Leave overnight and apparently just wipe the oven out in the morning. Haven't tried it myself, but will when I finally get my oven back up to scratch again.

Like the white vinegar idea............will tell OH......also remind him to get some soda crystals. My Mum used to always have a packet in the cupboard when we were kids and I never understood what she used them for.
