cleaning the oven

Oven Pride is the stuff for really grimed up cookers.
Bicarb, Your local pharmacy can get you 1.5kilo tubs. The most I've paid is £5. I usually have to wait a couple of days and they want payment in advance.0 -
Chinese supermarkets sell large bags of bicarb for about £2.50.
The best oven cleaner I've used is sold by Lakeland-it's a gel that you paint on and doesn't smell. I can't bear the smell of the spray on cleaners.0 -
I use bicarb too, but I make up the paste (just with water) and leave it on over night. Then next day wipe it off. It does take a few goes but works eventually.
I buy ours from our local weigh and save 20p for 100g0 -
Believe it or not but I actually used a sharp chisel on my oven door when I couldn't shift the burnt on stuff any other way. It worked perfectly !0

if not looks like it will be the chisel method
thanks- prior planning prevents poor performance!

It might not sound very moneysaving, but if the OvenPride doesn't work, maybe try hiring an over cleaning company such as Cookerburra to clean it.
You say it's a good oven, so paying £50-£60 to get every last bit of it cleaned to like new is better than paying for a new oven I think.0 -

Opened this thread about an hour ago and it pricked my conscience...I cleaned the oven earlier in the week, but didn't do the glass. It was truly manky!
Anyhow, I used the Kim and Aggie bicarb and washing up liquid idea and it's come up a treat (I also had to use a fair amount of elbow grease ). I even gave it a go on the outside and the oven looks like new (better not look too closely at the inside though!)
Think I might try the same trick on the insides of the oven as the cleaner I used took the surface grease off, but left quite a bit behind.
I soaked the racks in a biological washing powder solution for the best part of a day and they are also looking good. Not perfect but a lot better than before!
Cheers

OH MY GOD!!!
i really dread to think what must be in that oven pride stuff.
after less than 4 hours i couldnt resist having a little prod and poke and the welded on 5 year old grime is just sliding off :j :j
i have just put the racks in the bag and after about 20 minutes they are starting to look silver again ! i cant believe it, i didnt even know for sure they were chrome, they could have been some obscure black metal for all i knew :rotfl: :rotfl:
havent wiped it off yet, will leave it untill the kids are in bed. i must admit it is looking promising- prior planning prevents poor performance!

I do similar but with a paste of bicarb and vinegar. Cuts into the grease on the glass door and works well
Needs rinsing fairly well due to powder residue from the bicarb, but it's ok
I can second this method for the glass door (they usually unscrew so you can leave them to work to one side while you tackle inside).
I also use the oven cleaner from lakeland (which sounds similar to Ovenpride). My OH had never really cleaned his oven very well and I tackled it the other week as the kitchen had a horrible smell and I suspected it was being caused by the oven:eek:
Its called Ovenmate. Not cheap but I haven't used anything else since using it - it restored the blacked shelves back to shiny metal again - I left it to soak in standing on newspaper for half an hour while I tackled the other bits - it was amazing to see it coming off so easily.
When I finished, my OH reckoned it was cleaner than when he bought the house! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
