a friend of mine keeps raving about an oven cleaner which apparently has charlie dimmock on the box...does anyone know what she's talking about? or has she inhaled too many oven cleaner fumes?

my oven must be really disgusting because she keeps mentioning this product to me...talk about dropping hints!

It's oven pride...she used to advertise it on the TV, that's how I first came across it. It is as good as this thread says too, I swear by it and use it every couple of months to keep my cooker looking good.

Can anyone tell me whether I can use Oven pride on the roof of my oven or if it will just drip off?? The roof is covered in fat probably where I always do my roasties on the top shelf and they spit a bit!

I tried Mr Muscle a while back and nearly choked on the fumes!!

In the past, before I discovered OvenMate I used to clean my oven shelves and glass by soaking in a very hot solution using Ariel or other biological powder. If you have a deep sink you can put the stuff in and use about 1/4 pkt of detergent and boiling water from the kettle. If you don't have a big enough sink, use the bath and half a packet of detergent (though you will have to clean the scum mark off the bath aftewards!). Leave the stuff to soak for as long as you can. The enzymes in the powder 'eat' the grease and food deposits and you can wipe off the softened gunk with a scourer or brillo pad with very little effort afterwards. I must say it put me right off using Ariel to wash my clothes when I saw what it did to the dirty oven! I don't know if this works out cheaper than buying a proprietory cleaner, but it works.

My last oven was vile. It was supposedly "self clean" and it clearly wasn't, but because of the coating you weren't supposed to use cleaning products on it! After a while I ignored the rules and cleaned it any way. I wish I'd started a lot earlier because by then there was so much burned on crud that I never did manage to clean it properly. I tried:

Fairy Power Spray - completely useless. Every time I used the cooker afterwards the kitchen stank of burning chemicals. I had to scrub and scrub with plain hot water to rinse it off, and the scrubbing didn't work either.

    Mr Muscle - useless

Bowl of ammonia left overnight to loosen the dirt - didn't help

Some paste in a tub - might have been Astonish? Again, completely useless and had to be rinsed endlessly to get it off. By now I was convinced that the only reason my oven was a tiny bit cleaner was the amount of elbow grease I used on it.

Brillo pads - again, I think elbow grease was the main ingredient. Not much help.

Bio soap powder and hot water in a bath - naaaah, didn't work

Bicarb and vinegar paste left on to soak - got rid of some fresh stains but made no difference to old stains

Getting a repair man to replace the broken door - lovely clean door! Looked fab till the new stains came along...

Oven Pride - did a fantastic job of getting the shelves clean, but if I remember rightly you're not supposed to use it on glass doors (I might be mistaken). I had limited success using it in the oven because it's all runny and pooled on the bottom of the oven so the sides didn't get clean. The bottom was pretty clean where the product had been lying, but it was very difficult to rinse off afterwards - this stuff is neat caustic soda and VERY dangerous, I was really quite worried that I couldn't rinse it off. I rinsed the oven trays by taking them out into the street and holding them over the gutter while DH poured buckets over them. Oven Pride would be ideal if gravity wasn't a problem.

I was at my wits' end but the problem resolved itself when I moved out a few weeks ago. If I still lived there I would seriously consider employing someone to come in and clean it. Actually after over ten years I'd be tempted to get a new kitchen and have done with it :rotfl:

Hi, sorry if this has been posted before.

I use ammonia. I put all the oven trays , drip trays and obven shelves in a double bin bag and pour in a cup of ammonia. Avert your eyes cos this stuff is strong. Knot the bag up and leave outside overnight.

Next day take stuff out of bag( using gloves!) hose down if possible and the gunge sloughs off. Really excellent.

I have got ammonia at Boots and certain hardware stores. Worth a try.

Look in your local paper/yellow pages for a electrical repair shop(our is called Electrofix), bulbs should be pretty standard, but it may be best to get the old one out and take it with you.

I have a similar problem, bit it's the fan in the back if my oven, it was bright and shiney when the oven was new but is now brown (burnt on grease I suppose), any solutions?

My electric oven is also supposedly self clean, but you have to turn on to the highest temp for about 30mins

The grill element in the top of the oven also get spattered with grease from roasting, so when you use it the smoke it produces as it burns off, well.......
