  • Im going to try the white wine vinegar in my oven. I dont like using harsh chemicals for cleaning the oven as Im worried about fumes etc.

My oven is really clean. I only ever cook chicken breasts in there and always wrap them in tin foil and put them on a baking tray and casseroles in big pots.

Something called "astonish", stocked in wilkinsons. A paste in a tub, safe enough for the people at work to use, when bleach, mr muscle etc are banned under the COSSH regs.

I used "cif" oven cleaner for the first time before Xmas, okay not terribly OS, but it didn't choke me to death & it got the job done in a remarkably short time. Everyone v impressed, even DD1, (who is 22 and still knows everything ;) )

I just used Ovenpride - the shelves have come up perfectly after being in the bag for a couple of hours, but the bottom of the oven is still absolutely caked. I've had a go with a knife and a metal spatula but there's still a lot there. Going to try some Astonish I just found under the sink (have rinsed the oven first just in case chemicals react with each other).

The grill part at the top of our oven seems to smoke near on every time we use it. The oven has a gas hob and is a fan asssisted electric oven part. I'm a bit scared of rubbing chemicals on the gas filiament - am i safe to do so? x

I didn't have any Astonish after all. Half the oven floor is good, the other half still has as many crusty bumps and hillocks as the Andes! I'll have to tackle it again another day. I'd definitely use Ovenpride again on the shelves; once my oven-floor is cleaner, it'd probably be good in there too, but right now it doesn't cut the mustard. I think it's going to take a chisel, wire wool and brute force to get off years of caked grunge. I may just bite the bullet and get the professionals in.

Whats the best way of cleaning the fan part of a fan assisted electric oven ? OH can take the sides of the oven out and do them but all he's managed to do with the fan part is put some de-greaser on...............it gets fat splashes from roasts etc.

My instructions say not to steam clean. I used the thing you scrape paint off windows (Stanley make).
