Oven help please!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just moved into uni, and we have a Baby Beling oven. It is really disgusting inside, with years of burnt on black food. We have a cleaner, but so far her "cleaning" hasn't made any difference.

I really don't want to cook in it in it's present state, but getting a new one isn't an option. Does anyone know anything that might help?

  • Check out the thread about cleaning a hob further down as loads of different ideas there.

If you have a Sainsburys near you have a look in the seasonal reductions as I found their own BBQ Pride cleaning pack for 35p. It includes gloves, a bag and the solution. You put the trays etc in the bag with the solution, seal up and leave. I haven't used it yet but other people have recommended similar product.

  • I certainly wouldn't go using ammonia in a confined space since I found my mother collapsed on the bathroom floor when she mixed cleaning products which created fumes.

We had no idea how long she had been lying there for.

Amonia fumes become toxic (Very toxic to the pointof being deadly) when mixed with bleach. If used unmixed or diluted with water in a well ventilated space it should be fine. My Nan used to "Amonia" her oven once a month, a small amount in an old carton at the bottom of the cold oven with the door shut for an hour or 2. When opening the door ensure you ventalite well, the fumes won't atually hurt you but they don't smell pleasent & can make you feel sick. You should be able to just wipe clean the oven though!
I think Amonia can be purchased at the pharmacy counter in Boots, I'm sure it has all the do's & don'ts listed & is a fantastic general household cleaner if used safely.

probably already suggested somewhere else, but aren't you just supposed to put a slice of lemon in a bowl of water and boil it in there for a couple of mins..............or is that a microwave ?? :-/

no., thats for a microwave, and the water needs to be boiled from a kettle first. bicarb (1 tsp) works instead of lemon too.

Is this safe for a gas cooker? I've never had to clean one before and not too sure what's dangerous and what isn't! the cooking flame is exposed... don't know if that's relevant?
I'm learning little by little... I'll get there one day!!!
