I'm desperate for popcorn (of all things) but will try to resist.

Have you tried making your own popcorn?? yummy, really cheap and low fat (so long as you dont cover it in sugar or toffee!)

I really worry about this alot. I do have a lot of weight to lose (and lose it I will), but the skin thing is concerning me. It is one of the main reasons I started going to the gym.

I saw the TV show last night about the woman who lost 30 stone - her skin was the stuff of nightmares!!

If I thought that is what I am going to look like at the end of my journey I think I would get off the bus now!

Does anyone know if this horrible skin leftovers will happen to anyone who loses a lot of weight? ie 15 to 20 stone?

Please help you guys - I am starting to panic now!!

Marion & MikeI was always under the impression that the excess skin usually came as a result of losing a lot of weight too fast. Surely, even if you lose a lot of weght, so long as you do it steadily at a healthy pace then as your body gets smaller over time the rest of your body can keep up and your skin shrinks with it. especially if you do exercise as well as dieting. I've seen similar things on television of people with lots of saggy skin but they always seem to have lost huge amounts too quickly imo. I always thought it's a bit like those people having liposuction needing to wear big stretchy lycra pants afterwards to hold them in and stop their skin from sagging all over the place after losing so much fat so quickly.
Although, like consultant suggested age may also be a factor, as it affects the skin's natural elasticity. it's worth askin your doctor about it and maybe they'll be able to offer a solution?

    i can't believe i'm the first to mention it . . . . .

    the truth about size zero

eeeewwww! On the one it was scary, on the other it was motivating in a weird way. I kept thinking if she can get down the gym for 2 hours a day every day surely i can go 3 times a week. Do i need help? And i'm not one to cry at kids on telly but that 12 year old had me in tears. She looked so very young, it was dreadfully upsetting. And seeing the end result for Louise was shocking. One of her observations really stood out for me - she was musing to herself that a few years ago she was considered to be small at a size 8, and 12 was average and desirable. Now we've got to a point where we seem to be supposed to believe that 8 is normal and 4 is small and desirable. Yet we are constantly bombarded with all these images and information about obese Britain. No bl%$dy wonder our 12 year olds are anorexic!! finished ranting now. Your kitchen sounds nice Mike I shall look forward to seeing your pictures. consultant, you've probalby entioned it before but is your trip to NY a special occasion? And did you get the bridesmaids dresses sorted out!?

Victory, you are indeed hard on yourself. Whilst you are seeing brilliant results, are you living your life as you really want to. I don't want to preach, but you need to enjoy life as well. Do you feel that you can live like this for ever or will the deprivation eventually grind you down? If you lose weight too fast, you run the risk of losing lean muscle tissue, which will lower your metabolism and make it easier to gain the weight back.
If you know exactly what you're doing, I apologise and will keep my beak out :D

    [/QUOTE]

No, no keep your beak in:D It is all good, love this thread....:j

I never had VD food but H did, never had pizza but H did...so no, it will be impossible to keep up, I am the most determined, stubborn sod I know, I have done it many times before (not in the last 6 years though since the birth of my son!!) and I know I can do it and that is more important to me and keeps me going more than wanting to cheat, the need to give up, the need for more food all that pales into significance knowing my weight is coming down to lessen the risk for me as a diabetic of a heart attack... my BMI is coming down to 28.4 (needs to be 25)

I just don't want to be the one they leave at home anymore because I can't keep up, the one that gets 'taunted' at the shops, bus stop etc by kids etc.

All this forever would grind me down because it is not me!! I want to loose the weight more than I want anything else and that is what will happen....I will ask my diabetic nutriotionalist on the 5th April exactly how to maintain...how to live life and not have to do it this way otherwise what is the point?

I could never be a size 0 or that dedicated to eating only salads day in and day out like on the show last night with 2 hours gym and some P.E teacher screaming commands at me:rotfl: :rotfl:

katiepoppycat, i didnt watch that show but i watched a very similar one on bbc 3 the other night, and it is so shocking to see what is considered 'normal' nowadays.

Isnt it strange that all you see on tv is that children are all obese or that we're all starving ourselves to be size 0, it's like there's no middle ground now!!!

Great that you're going to start at the gym, however you should be able to lose some by diet alone (providing you're not a skinny malinky, and actually at your body's natural weight?), so if you haven't done so in over 4 months, I'd definitely see the doctor and/or change the diet.

I know SW works - enough people on here have had success with it, however I'm a great believer in different diets suiting different people - our genetic codes are so very different it stands to reason that different things would make us lose weight. Why not try weight watchers for a week and see if that makes any difference? Even if the diet doesn't suit you, it might kick start your metabolism into action and start the ball rolling while you find something that does work for you...

Saying all this, has your body changed shape at all? I've only lost three pounds in a yo yoing fashion, however my OH and work colleague (see below for convo) have commented that I've lost weight, I can see the difference on my stomach and face, and my clothes are loser (or not straining :rotfl: )...

Whatever you decide, :T :T :T for sticking with it for so long - even if you feel a :wall: at least you've been doing it the world of good by all your presumed healthy eating! So, best of luck, and please do get a check up - could be thyroid, PCOS or any number of things (DON'T mean to scare you, prob nothing, but just to be on the safe side)...

    THE convo:

Rhonda: you've lost weight, I have noticed, you know
Me: oh... thanks! [pause] off my face really
    Rhonda: yeah
Me: so annoying - not fussed about my face!
Rhonda: oh no, you've lost your BELLY too
Me: [laughing nervously] I don't have a belly
Rhonda: I know... but you did!!! :o:o:o

I have just finished reading the last couple of pages and have got more inspiration from these than any of the classes that I frequented in the past. Whenever anyone of us has a problem there is always someone here with a helpful tip or advice, and it's all free!!

I can't add much more to the excess skin discussion, other than I read once that if you do regular excercise right from the start, this does help; so Mike and Marion, you are doing the right thing and we won't allow you to 'get off the bus', so there :p .

Like beanilou I was interested to read your post re your diet Victory, as I have 'only' managed to lose 12.2lb in 8 weeks. I'm very impressed with the determination that you have, it must be hard to diet whilst having to have sufficient intake to control your diabetes. I've found that a good way of portion control is, where appropriate, to use those shallow boat shaped dishes that you quite often get served in pubs, you can't overfill it without making a mess, and I find it quite sufficient. When I saw your BMI I realised that I hadn't done this for a couple of years, so I found a site and was pleasantly surprised - thanks.

Welcome to becky_sleaf. I hope the weigh in goes well tonight. I'm 5'3" and know what a difference a few lbs can make.

Honey28, I think you will find the increase in excercise will help and would suggest that you try calorie counting for a week or two just see just what your intake is, please please don't think for one minute that I'm knocking SW, but I'm not convinced about free foods especially at the end stages of a diet. That's just my 2p worth :D

I think some of those catwalk models are quite hideous-looking with their 'pipecleaner' legs, I don't know who the designers are trying to kid, size 4 would look weird on me.

Finally.......only 2 days to go until Suggs spills the beans............

Just to join in with the size 4/0 discussion...

Are 'real' people really aspiring for this? I'm in my early(ish) 20s, have recently graduated, and have friends from a variety of backgrounds, including lots of people in promotions and performance (ie looks based) - as far as I know, none of them are trying to be this small! I have one friend who probably is a size 4/6 - her size 8 coat hangs off her - she attributes this to smoking and she's also very hard up, and just doesn't eat junk. She's certainly not happy with being this small, and has been actively trying to put on weight, if only so she can buy clothes in her size! She also makes no objection when I make her plate of food the biggest! The rest of my friends are 8-12, with the odd size 14. I have noticed that the ideal is now an 8-10 rather than the 10-12 when I was at school (and I went to a very skinny school - all girls at a very academically intense institution = loads didn't eat), but I don't see the trend for smaller than this. Also I don't see an abundance of size 0/4s on the tube etc...

Don't you think the trend is more confined to celebs? Obviously there are always going to be those who want to get really small who aren't under the media spotlight, but sadly this has always been the case - I'm really not convinced its taking the nation by storm as much as the papers would have us believe...

Please butt in and tell me if you think I'm completely wrong - offering my opinion on what could be a really good discussion, especially considering the breadth of country in this forum! :)

    OK:rotfl: :rotfl:

KatiePC. The trip to New York isn't a special occasion really. I have always wanted to go there but my DH hates the thought of it. My son came one day and said that he and his fiancee had booked a trip to NY and I found I could hardly be happy for him, I was so gutted it wasn't me.
When I mentioned it to my friend at work and told her how much I wanted to go, she said "I'd go with you". This was February 2006 and within a week we'd booked it and went. It was just amazing and as soon as we got back we started to look for another trip and that's now sorted for 29th March (can't wait, I'm so excited :j )

The bridesmaid dresses they sent are the wrong ones, but fortunately in the right colour (black  ). All the girls actually prefer this one, fortunately, so it hasn't been the disaster it could have been. On this subject, can anyone tell me if you would expect to have to pay for alterations when you've been measured for your dress? They have all come in a size larger than they are and we've been told that we have to pay for them altering. It made me wonder why they measured them so badly in the first place.

Sorry everybody, back to slimming now :D

Becky, how has your weigh-in gone?

Catmeister well done on your inch-loss. One of my members told me she had gone down a size in her jeans and she'd only lost 2½lbs! Exercise does tone you up and personally, I'd rather it showed in my clothes than on the scales. I watched the programme last night and one of the catwalk models wouldn't have looked out of place in a picture from a concentration camp, but I think you're right, it's mostly celebs that hanker for that look. Unfortunately so many young girls hanker after looking like their favourite celeb. It's very sad
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
