I'm loving my bumgenius nappies, I'm annoyed that I've only got five so don't get to use them every day yet, as they take a couple of days to wash/dry...

Are you using them overnight too Aimless?

Not yet, as I'm not sure how long they'd go without a leak? I change the Ebay cheapies roughly every 3 hours, with an extra cotton booster folded in front of his boy parts. :D When I take them apart after, they generally feel wet all the way along, or nearly all along the inner, but I guess that doesn't mean they'd leak if left longer? I've had one pooey and one wet leak with Totsbots, I think they're maybe not quite his shape at the mo? And one wet with the Ebay ones, but I'd accidentally used a microfibre booster instead of cotton. And the nappy I'd taken off him half hour earlier was dry, so he must've saved it up! :D

Hello all you mummies! :)

Just butting in for a minute to ask a question about car seats (felt a bit shy about posting a whole new thread so thought I'd see if I got any answers on here first!)

Most of you have probably shopped fairly recently for a from-birth car seat, so I'd like some pearls of wisdom...

We need a maxi-cosi car seat, as it is compatible with our pram chassis (Petite Star Kurvi). I'm currently trying to work out what will be best for us, given the following:

    - I know the dangers of keeping a baby in a car seat for too long at a time, therefore I'm not planning to use the car seat/pram as a "travel system" as such, very often. However I figured it might be useful sometimes, hence buying a car seat that fits on the pram.

    - Because I'm not planning to use it as a travel system all that much, is it necessary to buy a base for the car seat? How much inconvenience will it really be to strap it in each time?

    - Our car doesn't have Isofix. I know you can get the EasyBase units which strap into the car, though. Can't decide if it's worth spending the extra money to get one.

    - I can't see much difference (apart from cost!) between the Cabriofix and the Pebble. Any thoughts?

    - Or there's the Maxi Cosi Citi, which seems just as good, but it isn't compatible with any bases. It's a bit cheaper than the Cabriofix, which makes me think we should just get that if we're not going to get a base anyway. But is it worth getting the Cabriofix/Pebble just so we've got the option to buy a base later if we want one?

    Sorry - so many questions!

Grateful for any of your thoughts advice, having been there, done that so recently!

    BB x

Hi BB1984, I have the cabriofix and its been a great seat. We also have the family fix base which is fantastic and so convenient but as you say a little pricey. Once you start using it you realise how awkward and time consuming strapping the seat in can be but if you don't use it you'll not know any different. What I'm trying to say is that if you're not set on having an isofix base I wouldn't spend the money on one. My OH was keen on it which is why I bought it and while I love the convenience of it I can and have managed without it at times. Its a nice luxury rather than a neccessity imo. The majority of people I know don't have isofix bases either so chances are you'll be happy without one.

Before buying the maxi cosi seat and base unit check in a shop that you are able to work the release mechanism ok.

I had the pebble seat with the isofix base and really struggled with it as I found the release mechanism very awkward. I could not reach both sides comfortably at the same time which made the whole thing very dangerous. It was the same with the pram chasis to the extent that I couldnt use it. The first time I used it was when I went to collect a prescription from my local chemist and I could not release the car seat from the pram chasis and ended up having to ask a random stranger if they could please help :rotfl:

I know most people seem to love maxi cosi infant seats but I was really disappointed with it and regret buying it

I have to agree with koalamummy that I find it really difficult at times to get the car seat off the pram chassis. Its really hard to get your arms round both side of the seat to release it. It gets easier with practice but this is something I never thought about when choosing my car seat and pram. Having said that I would choose the same car seat again. I have the familyfix base which releases one handed from the front so its been super easy to attach and release the seat in the car.

Sorry you've had so many problems with your base though, thats really a worry you could do without.

Kira, hope you had a nice anniversary yesterday! We had a curry delivered which was delicious :)

SmlSave, I'm back at work on Monday, Elliot will be 8 weeks and I'm still bf'ing. I'm feeling quite guilty about having to leave him, but DH will take over when I'm not there. Trying to express enough milk to keep him going with feeds. I've got two lectures on my first day back so will probably be too distracted to worry once I get going, but it is going to be really hard walking out the door on monday morning :(

Better news is there's allotments available locally! What veg did people start with for weaning?

Elliot is happy in his basket today only if I keep the mobile going... wishing it was a battery one instead of wind-up. Still, all this back and forwards to it must be good for weight loss....

Brocolli, cauliflower, potato, butternut squash, carrots, courgette. We're doing BLW but these would work well whatever way you do it.

P had chicken for the first time today. I was fascinated watching her eat a big piece of it and she enjoyed it so much. She really liked the feel of it as well and spent ages playing with it. I was dreading weaning thinking it sounded like a lot of hassle compared to the milk feeds:o but honestly it been a lot of fun.

Thanks... I have a load of Fuzzibunz too but they're birth to potty so still a bit big on Amelia, even on the smallest setting. Just waiting for her to put a bit more weight on then we'll be using those... Don't think I can justify buying any more! Although there's a 'preloved' page on Facebook that I've joined and it's hard not to get carried away by some of the lovely nappies people are selling!

If you're on Facebook there's a 'Cloth Bum Mums' group too...

Has anyone had first jabs with LO have got some calpol in case but not sure if will need it, also got to weigh him too, have never been to clinic before so decisions jabs first or weigh mmm they ate both scream starters aren't they!! I am very nervous about going there as apart from a few pram walks have not gone anywhere on my own with Scott for a time (10am-12pm) am normally not showered until 12

I wish I had given LO calpol after her first jabs but I was adamant I didn't want to give it unless she definitely needed it. She screamed when she had the jabs then slept for 2 hours - then she woke up and screamed for 2 hours solid  2nd jabs I gave the calpol striaght after and had no probs.

I would go for the weigh in before jabs, being stuck with a needle is more traumatic than taking your clothes off ;)

Just to add my tuppence worth to the maxi cosi debate - I have the cabriofix and have been very pleased with it. I decided not to buy a base straight away and see how I managed without it first of all. The seat is really very easy to fit in securely with the seatbelt, it literally only takes a couple of seconds and I only have a 3 door car as well. I decided I didn't need one and have managed just fine without. It does not cause any problems getting her out of the car if she's asleep. I would suggest doing the same, sure you can always order up one online a week or two later if you find it's too much of a faff.

The money saved in not buying a car seat base has meant that I don't feel guilty in being a little indulgent with my high chair - I got a stokke tripp trapp from my local gumtree for £50 (so still quite MSE as they are about £160 new with the baby set) and I am SO pleased with it! It fits in with our kitchen really well and I love the concept of a kids chair that lasts from weaning to adulthood. It is very well made indeed. LO is loving her grub, she's 6.5 months and I have been doing a mix of mashed fruit/veg and finger foods which she is hoovering up with gusto. Not found anything yet that she hasn't liked!
