I really hope that I get to sleep longer between feeds tonight as need the sleep and I am looking forward to taking LO out in the snow tomorrow. Hope everyone getting on well and welcome to the new arrivals. Gotta go dream feed now, fingers crossed will work!

I've just woken up with incredibly full, painful boobs as Amelia has been asleep for six hours! I'm in two minds as to whether to go and express some of this, but then I don't know if she's going to wake up while I'm doing that and want feeding! I know she'd wake up if she's hungry enough, it's just a bit unnerving as she's never slept for this long before...

Ive not got advice or a solution as such, but observations and mini mantras that might be helpful. I didn't produce any colostrum, so initially breastfeeding didn't work well dispite trying loads, then my milk came in and I continued on a mix of formula and expressed. I think with the lack of collostrum and the ease of the bottle he just got a bit lazy for the breast. However I kept trying him a couple of times a day, when I had part expressed so the milk was already sucked through for him. This worked a couple of times in hospital, but since I got out yesterday it has worked every time (6 so far, 2 without expressing first, it hardly makes me the expert I know ;) ) My midwives kept saying if you still have milk, its not to late for them to learn to suck, so i just keep trying. I know this is much easier said than done, but after a major wobble about how it wasn't working and deciding that DH can just feed Seb from now on, I seem to have turned a corner. For me, I just had to remind myself that bottle feeding is not the end of the world, so I should try to relax a little cause it would happen or it wouldn't. I massage my breasts by dragging my knuckles from the outsides towards the nipple, washing them in hot soapy water (that might just be me being kinky) then I found expressing till they felt completely deflated to be such a relief I felt like a new woman. HTH.

On a side note, I've been thinking of advertising slogans that properly describe breastfeeding as I think it is very misrepresented.

    Breastfeeding Sucks!
Breastfeeding, hurts like a MotherF, but your baby might be worth it?

No offence intended to bottle feeders, I'm pro choice, I'm just trying to keep myself motivated and it's only day 6!

Jenjade your GP is the best place to go. Dont be put off though if you get an unsympathetic doctor who gives you the standard all babies are sick regularly line. If that happens just as to see another doctor.

    Morning all,

Had a better night with Noah last night, he still woke up 5 times really snuffly and coughing, but he settled back down pretty quickly and once he was asleep he seemed to sleep a lot better with his mattress propped up (so thanks for that advice!)

Hes still snuffly this morning but I think we are both feeling better for managing to get a few hours sleep. OH managed to get a lot more sleep as well which is good as he had to get up at 5am for work.

Going to keep wrapped up in the warm over the next couple of days and hopefully Noah will be back to his usual self soon.

Thanks Koalamummy, I went to the doctors last week. She was good but ellie didn't cough, be sick or crackle while we were there so she didn't offer anything. I have been concerned about Ellies breathing which seems to take a lot of effort it is laboured and rapid at times. She said her breathing seemed to be a bit rapid at times and said to keep an eye on it.

    Morning all,

Carmilla - Well done on perserving, its really tough in the early days esp when they wont latch. It sounds like you have turned a corner though :) I am also pro choice but really wanted to BF and also made up sayings to motivate myself! My LO is nearly 8 weeks now, it does get easier!

Gilly - I think i have mentioned it before but the nipple shields really worked for me as they are shaped and feel like a teat. They may be worth a try, i also reduced the bottles and after a week no longer used the shields.

Jenjade - Have you tried keeping her more upright after feeds and raising the matress slightly. My friend said this helped her LO who had reflux. The bottle of formula before bed appartently helps them go longer as formula is harder to digest so makes them feel fuller for longer. I havent tried it but all of a sudden my LO started goinging longer after her last feed. I think they will go longer when they are ready.

4nnabella - Its quite scary when they first sleep for a longer stretch, I had to poke her to make sure she was ok :o

Hope everyone has a good day x

Jenjade I know how that feels! :D My baby girl was recently diagnosed as being dairy intolerant as well as having severe reflux to the point where I have an eight month old baby with a spectacular case of food refusal :( I had almost moved into our surgery as I was seeing doctors about her various symptoms so frequently before she was eventually referred to a consultant. Persistence was definitely what won in the end, so please if you feel that something is not how it should be with your baby just keep going back until somebody takes some action.

I feel like I was never taken too seriously as my daughter always was and still is a large baby who smiles all of the time, except when she is being sick.
