Kira - when Poppy was little she would wake up and cry everytime i moved her into moses basket so what we did was put a hot water bottle in there for a bit and then took out before we put her in. Think the shock of going from mummys warm arms to the moses basket was waking her up and warming it up a bit seemed to help. Not saying that is definately the problem but could be worth a try.

Ro not sure about bottle feeding and making up bottles but i might be able to help on sterilising.

Firstly dont get to hung up on it when we were kids thing would have not be sterile!

Make sure bottles are clean and everything will be fine

What i do (for expressed milk)

Wash bottles in hot water with a tiny amount of washing up liquid

rinse with hot water to get rid of bubbles etc

then i sterile then in my tommee tippee microwave steriliser

it said on the box bottles remain sterile for 24 hours so i take them from the steriliser as i need them.

just try not to get to hung up on things it really doesnt matter that much as long as they are clean

I wonder if anyone can help. Ive been expressing every 3 hours (including twice in the middle of the night) for a day and a half now. Obviously before my milk came in it was only collustrum I was getting but it was an ok amount. Now since last night my boobs have got harder (like rocks) but on my last 2 pumps I'm not getting a lot out at all. Are my boobs too full or is this just my supply? :( Im confused and upset.

Gilly, it sounds like you're engorged....

Keep trying to express, press down on a spot before moving to another one. MW told me not to rub as it could damage breast tissue. Soak in a bath helps as well. If you try to relax it will be easier, though thats so hard to actually do!

  • Congratulations Redhead :)

Hope everyone managed to get a reasonable nights sleep. I managed 2 1/2 hours sleep at one point, otherwise it was feeds every 1 1/2 hours, yawn.

I'm still getting really tired whenever I try and do much, but hoping to get as far as the letter box today to post some thank you cards. It is getting quite frustrating when I'm used to being really active, I'm not good at sitting around (particularly not with sore stitches too, it's not like sitting is particularly comfy!).

Gilly, not sure I can add any advice to what's already suggested, but sending hugs and hope things get easier for you soon.

    Gilly,
I agree with Lirin.. it definately sounds like your milk has come in properly and you are engorged. When they get that full and hard, it actually gets harder to get milk out whether its by LO, or expressing, and you need to "get things going" to relieve the pressure and make it easier. I got it when my milk came in, but i often have it to a lesser degree when i wake in the morning after a 3 hour gap beween feeds.

As well as warm bath or shower, what helped me was a warm flannel on the boobs, although some people say cool cabbage leaves from the fridge really help (yes really!). I also found hand expressing a small amount helpful to get things moving. It supposedly also helps if you express looking at your LO, or at least at a photo of them, as it triggers the let down response.

Hope it eases up for you. Keep at it hon, you are doing great!

Wendz, thanks for the suggestions. I dont think the moving from warm mummy to crib helps, but i reckon there is something else going on last night, as she doesnt usually kick off so much going down.
Listening to her breathe, it sounds like she might be a bit congested in her passages- her nose is pretty clear, but she does sneeze a little and it just sounds a bit wheezy in her throat.
I gave up settling her upstairs in the end, and brought her downstairs about 3am, so DH could get some sleep before work. She did drop off again more deeply on me, i think because she was in a more upright position when i'm on the sofa. Managed to get her into the pram for proper lying down sleep for a few hours, with me on the sofa beside it and then got another 1.5hrs where she went down in the crib and me in bed.
Exhausted doesnt cover it today, and DH has gone in for his first full day back in the office. Scary mary, being left alone, and i know DH will come home knackered and not want to take LO off my hands for a quick break..

    Hoo humm.

On another note, we have tried LO with a bottle a few times, so dh could give her expressed milk, but she refuses to use it. We mentioned it to the HV, who said dont bother with bottles, try using a Doidy cup, which is technically for older babies/toddlers moving from bottle, but she recommends them instead as often babies do much better with it than bottles. We've ordered one, and going to try it out when it arrives. Will let you all know how we get on.
