Hey everyone. Sorry I haven't been back since I introduced myself! LO has suspected reflux so lots of sleepless nights as he won't sleep lying down!

Which brings me onto my next question. Has anyone here used a cot wedge? Did it help the reflux? We have our 6 week check on Monday so will ask about treatments i.e. thickening feed or Infant Gaviscon, which is what my HV suggested but I'm thinking maybe a cot wedge with medical treatment would be even more beneficial.

How do you feel about CBT? Mental health should be taken seriously in pregnancy and if you jump up and down enough, your GP should be able to expedite some sort of alternative treatment. As you say, you can't really keep taking the drugs because it's not good for the baby but to leave you without support is not good either. Got any other plans in place?

Problem is - the mental health team are in the hospital that hell broke loose in... and I have massive flashbacks and will end up struggling for weeks if I go back there (some comedian scheduled my pelvic floor physio check in the open plan area next to the NICU doors) so I can't go there - the mental health team have spoken to me on the phone and basically just discharged me as no cause for concern anyway - despite MW trying to push them to get them to come out and see me at home.

As for a cot wedge - we used the high tech solution of the phonebook under the cot legs.

We have a really sticky eye here, yellow goo coming out every hour or so. Seems quite common from what I've read. Been wiping it with tap water and cotton wool but read it needs to be cooled boiled water. What point do I need to do something more about it? See health visitor on Monday, it's definitely gone worse on last 24 hours with top and bottom lid being stuck together. Not too worried as it seems common bit at what point do I need to worry if at all?!

We had this last week - I took her to the doctor, who confirmed it's very common and most likely linked to the cold she's almost finished with. She said it usually clears within 3-4 days, but to come back if it hadn't cleared in that time or if it got worse. Was advised to clean with cotton wool and warm water as you're doing (doesn't need to be boiled), wash your hands before and after. Holding the warm cotton wool still on the closed eye for a few seconds can apparently help alleviate any discomfort. Clean every time there's yellow goo (or, in older babies, when they rub their eye), otherwise leave it alone as you'll just cause further irritation. I was advised to also clean the other eye a few times a day (obviously with a different bit of cotton wool and after hand washing) to prevent it from spreading. Unless it's getting worse you'll probably be fine to wait until you see the HV on Monday, but as always if you're concerned I'd call an out of hours doctor or NHS Direct. Hope it's better today x
  • Thanks Gilly re: sticky eye. It was awful all night, I kept bathing it and suddenly this morning it went as soon as it had come the day before!

As for milk spots, my poor baba looks like a teenager, she is covered in them! I want them to go asap!

Got the sleeping bag out of the wardrobe and going to try it for size when she gets up. Although as we had a superb nights sleep last night (2 x 3.5hour sleep stints!!!! - 5 weeks ago I'd have been complaining about lack of sleep now I class this as 'superb' lol) I wonder whether its worth changing the routine until we have a bad night again!

I didn't think the baby had a cold Nutella but she has definitely had those huge bogeys (not moist ;) lol!) this week so perhaps it was a minor sniffle and the eye is related? Either way it seems to have gone for the moment but I'll ask the HV about it on Monday thanks for replying about it :) I am going to have to register her at the doctors as well! Keep forgetting...oh and registering her birth oops!
  • spoke too soon! gooey eye is back with a vengence :(

also she has been sick three times today after feeds which is unlike her, she has only been feeding for about 20 minutes a time and the last time she was sick it looked like all of it came back up :( she hasn't done very well with getting her wind up the last day or so either. Hope the sick is normal as there did seem to be quite a bit of it. She seems happy enough and isn't crying for more so I think she is fine. Its such a worry being a mummy isn't it! :o

For anyone in need of a baby clothes spending spree: Boots have some good offers on at the moment, quite a lot of buy one get one half price and two for £8 on lots of things that normally cost £5 or £6 each. I got four dresses, two pairs of trousers and two sleepsuits for £32. They'd also sent me a voucher for an extra 250 points when you spend more than £25 and a voucher for double points (which work together, in case anyone else has them), so all in all a real bargain! :money:

Turtle, been meaning to say that I was so pleased to hear that you and your OH are getting on better now :) I know it's a couple of days ago now since you mentioned it, but better late than never...

Hey, my LO had silent reflux, undiagnosed for about 10 weeks- it was me that figured it out not any docs or HV's! We experimented with the following to help:

Keeping her upright for 20-30mins after a feed, before putting her down.
Winding her upright against my chest, head under my chin, and slowly rubbing (not patting!) her back from base of spine upwards.

To start with, we raised one end of her crib, which really seemed to help, so we invested in a crib wedge. However, it needed to be quite steep, and she would have rolled down it, so had to get a wrap (see below) to hold her in place. It was a bit of a faff getting her in without waking her, if she dropped off outside the crib, but with the wedge, she actually slept, so worth it.

Our GP/HV didnt help us with any of this, so had to buy it all, but i believe xGillyx had all her kit provided on prescription.

Savage, not sure why Victoria Slinglady hasn't replied either, I've also messaged her in Facebook, I guess she's on holiday or has a backlog of messages to reply. I'm keen on the one from the Facebook group, I thought it was a bit on the expensive side because it's the same price as a VSL (£25), but second hand. However, if it's in good condition and she can send it quickly, I'll get that one. I'm going to check now eBay as well. I'm waiting for a reply from the owner of the wrap as well. One question unrelated to wraps, have you thought about childcare for when you return to work? Is there anything good around your area? The reason I ask is that I've been asked to supply for my supervisor at uni on a course for three days in May and my lo will be just 5 months. I said yes, but I'm already panicking about having to leave her for a few hours in an unknown nursery. There's one near Piccadilly station that has a discounted price, but I wonder if there's anything even closer to Manchester Uni, or a childminder /babysitter. Just thinking about leaving her with complete strangers is creating anxiety, I guess I'll have to get over that if I plan to return to work eventually but at the moment it feels a crazy thing to do! :(

My lo had a hell of a day today. She's been unsettled and crying pretty much the whole day, from 9am until 10pm. My DH is getting very low, he feels powerless and is affecting him a lot. I guess it's also the lack of sleep and weird timetables at the moment that contribute to that. :( The gripe water today did nothing as far as I know. I don't want to keep giving it to her, as she's just over the 4 weeks and it says you should not give it to under 1 month olds. Also, if it worked all time I could justify it but so far worked half of the time. Idk what's going on with her, it feels to me as if it's discomfort from trapped wind and tummy ache, but nothing seemed to work!! Has anyone tried a warm water bottle on their tummy? Can this be done for a minute or two? I don't want to overheat her :( I know I've posted before about this, but it's very distressing not being able to calm her down and see her cry high pitch :( She moves in her cot and arches the back, turns the body almost to a side sleeping position and moves the head back often. She grunts and do little discomfort noises, almost like the start of a cry. She might start eating and seem ok, then a minute or seconds afterwards she would start crying with the teat still in her mouth and she would scream full pitch if I take the teat out. It looks as if she wants to eat but has pain from it. Sometimes she manages to trump and feel a bit more settled, sometimes not even that would help. When she is like this, her sleep is very light and she'll wake up very often or even would not sleep at all, or wake up suddenly crying. Occasionally, she would just seem wide awake and stare at everything, yet she would yawn and cry from exhaustion at the same time. The dummy seems to soothe her sometimes but not always. I'm lost. Idk what works and what doesn't anymore!! She's been now sleeping 4h after being screaming most of the day, so I'm here waiting with a feed but I don't want to wake her up, since this is the only deep sleep she has had in the whole day :(
