Got to agree with dizzi. I used water and cotton wool (pads are better than balls btw) for a few weeks until I thought bugger that and switched to wipes. As a result Freddie's nappy rash cleared up within 36 hours and he smelt a lot sweeter too.
Just buy wipes, Candlewax. If you're worried about sensitive little bots, the huggies pure ones are good. Most brands do an unperfumed one. I use whatever's on offer, personally."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
Hi, first baby due in a week so I will be on here asking for advice! I have already learnt a lot just reading back. I was wondering what you all do/did about nappy changing and using cooled boiled water and cotton balls at night? I was thinking of taking the water upstairs in a flask to keep it warm to change baby in the night so I don't have to bring him downstairs and wait for the water to boil and cool? Any advice?
Just to echo what others have said - we used warm water from the tap, never boiled it. Definitely one bit of 'official advice' to ignore! We still use water and cotton wool, and she's 8 months now - simply because we prefer it. I use wipes when we're out and about though (and have done since she was a couple of weeks old), and for explosive weaning poos that water alone would never be able to deal with! Oh, and Fluff is right - cotton pads are much better than balls, which are just tiny and annoying. Good luck for the birth0 -
Just a couple of newbie questions : do you take your lo to the shower room when you need one and are on your own? Or do you leave.him/her.on the other room and have a very quick shower? Also, what do you do with the baby nails? I filed them a bit yesterday, but I'm not sure that's enough or how often I should do it. I'm scared of using anything but the file!
In the very early days I only had showers whilst OH was around, but once he went back to work I'd leave her in her basket and put the monitor on - ideally whilst she was sleeping. Once we moved her to a cot I'd put the mobile on, and that's what I still do - she's happy to entertain herself for a bit. Needless to say though, shaving and proper cleaning happens when OH is around to look after her - all other showers are quick quick quick!
Nails - I've used scissors from Day 1. In the early days I cut them whilst she was sleeping, now she sits on my lap trying to grab the scissors, but the TV or daddy pulling funny faces usually manage to distract herTouch wood, we've never had any accidents or injuries!

I don't use cotton wool at all in this house - after the point our white and fluffy thing obsessed greyhound tried to eat the half-open pack!
In fact I'll be taking the same packet of it in to the hospital this time that I took in last time! (Hospital had drawers full of cotton wool balls for us to use so I just used theirs)Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -

I think you should proudly take your wipes with you, dizzi, and flaunt them in front of the anus-faced midwives."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

I did wonder if her basket was cold when she went back down my mum suggested putting a hot water bottle in it while she is out of it having her feed, great idea on principle with my third pair of hands!!
!
The minimum weight is usually 7 or 8 lbs, but just check the label before you buy. More important than weight is to check the neckline and make sure her head can't slip into the bag and get stuck. Like duvets, sleeping bags come in different togs, the thinnest and coldest being 0.5 tog. For winter you probably want 2.5 tog. You can also get them with or without sleeves, most commonly without.
I see no reason why they couldn't be used in a basket.0 -
Love my sleeping bags - so much easier than blankets, especially if you're regularly feeding a baby during the night. If you want one with sleeves - I find you do in winter unless you sleep in a heated room all night - then Purflo do one with detachable sleeves.
Alternatively grobag do sleepsuits with quilted sleeves that the baby wears together with a sleepbag without sleeves. Groovy!"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

Evening all
Launched straight into replying to posts and forgot to say hello! Hope mums and babies are well.
Good day here, went swimming this morning - hadn't been in a while due to xmas, being away, LO having a cold etc. but it went really well and she was a lot more involved than previously, splashing away like a pro!
Did the food shopping on the way home and spent the rest of the day cleaning, but so glad I did - it's all lovely and fresh-smelling now, so here's hoping for a lazy weekend
Fingers crossed for sleep tonight - last night was really good, she only woke up twice at 3am and 4am for the dummy, and then slept until 6.45!! That might not sound like much, but given that she normally wakes up between 4.30 and 5.30, it felt like a lie in. And then OH got up and fed her, and I got to sleep for another hour0 -
Oh and I've finally won the battle - she's started to happily chomp fish! I've taken so many disapproving and pained sighs from the in-laws over her reluctance to eat the stuff (I don't like fish myself) as if I've been secretly indoctrinating her into the fishy dodgers club that it's been getting to be quite a source of pressure on me over it - this week she's happily chomped down salmon, carrot and tomato twice finally!
Was the one big thing she was being reluctant to eat - and of course it was the one blooming thing I was likely to take flack over!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0
