Breastfeeding mamas, your boobs aren't supposed to be hard ;)

Early days, it happens a lot, as your supply is regulating. But once it's settled down to match your baby, you don't get hard boobs very often at all. That is of course until the first time your baby sleeps longer than usual...and instead of sleeping with them, you're wide awake with norks like boulders on fire, wondering when they are going to wake up and feed, haha :D

Interesting fact for you - when your boobs are hard like that, the milk that has been stored in them contains less fat. The milk that comes out when your boobs are soft is being made right there and then - and contains a higher content of fat. Sooooo hence the importance of "emptying both breasts" - so that baby gets to drink the higher fat content milk.

Also, "emptying" your breast is a misleading thing to say, technically they are never empty - in theory if your baby fed 24/7 then your body would make milk all that time. It doesn't need time to build up or anything like that, it can be made to order - how cool is that!

Brushed Reuben's little tooth before bed tonight - eeeee how did my baby get big enough to need his teeth brushing?? He's my big boy now :D

Marta, yay for red book! :j About time too... Re. nappies - if it's just a one-off leak I wouldn't worry; some newborn poos can be so explosive that no nappy on earth can contain them. But if you start getting leaks more regularly, then it's time to switch to the next size. The sizes overlap anyway, so you could always try the next size up if she's within the next weight range. We're now on size 4, but found we couldn't use any of the previous sizes up to the max. recommended weight as they started leaking long before that.

You said he's been doing it for quite a few days? It could be your body is reacting to it :) wouldn't worry, who wants boulders anyway :o

  • Ooh turtlemoose the things you learn on this thread :) Had no idea about hard boobies! I also thought if they were hard and full it would be better supply! Just goes to show how wrong I was! Yay for teeth brushing :)

Nutella - thanks for info re: baby event, will sign up price alerts on mysupermarket too - saved so much on baby stuff doing price alerts from Amazon on camelcamelcamel!

Marta - We have used a few size 2 pampers with our 2 week old (though she is a chubber) and all was well but Daddy put size 3 on by mistake and they leaked a few times, as did HUggies size ones. Perhaps it was just that particular poonami that couldnt be contained?

Bamama - thats loads to express well done you :)

We are trying a later feed tonight, little miss is wide awake and happy after her 7.30 feed so we are trying a 10.30-11 feed to see if she will last her 4 hours which she seems to have sometime in the early evening....that would be amazing! Haven't managed more than 2 hours unbroken sleep at a maximum. I think even one good-ish nights sleep per week would help! I'm clinging to the fact that it gets easier but I don't want to wish the time away either as I love my little crumply newborn baba :o

Well we've only had 4 nights home. We've had 7 hours, 9 hours, one night where he woke at 4 then 6 and we had 8 hours last night.

At least with firmer boobs you know there's something in there!

Edit : or did you mean cluster feeding? He's been doing that since we got home. Must have liked sleeping more in the hospital >< though we only had 2 full days of exclusive boobie feeding there.

Re. sleep - I'm still a bit anxious about my three-day residential meeting next month and being away from my little girl, BUT I've just realised that I'll (hopefully) have three nights of proper sleep for the first time in months :jSilver lining and all that... It better be a quiet and comfy hotel!
