I don't know how you ladies do it. I think I'd be going a bit crazy if I was up as much. Every so often we have a rubbish night and I have to overdose on coffee the next day.
I would say though the only thing that helped our sleeping was self settling and not picking up, sadlyx

Best thing that helped our sleeping - a sleepytot toy (but she has a dummy)! Attached a couple of dummies to it and put up with the time taken for her to learn how to use him to put her dummy back in herself - now the bunny rabbit himself has such a strong comfort association for her that you can see her instantly begin to zonk out and go sleepy when she's given him - and if she wakes up at 4am, she tends to just give Bunny a singing concert for 10 minutes, before chewing on his ears and going back to sleep again!
As for feeling guilty about sleep - stuff it - I resorted to handing hubby the baby this evening at 5pm and sleeping for three hours solid - and actually feel vaguely human for it (it's insomnia and pain that's killing me though)Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -

Oh yes we have a comforter too, and it definitely is loved. (In fact we have 3, how do they end up so stinky?!?) he can't go to sleep without it
and a dummy
but hopefully gonna wean off that soon.
Definitely for us though, the self settling at bedtime and nap times solved most of the night time issues, and even then he was waking for a feed, but it was up, feed, straight back down.
When we used to cuddle and rock him to sleep we were up and down all nightnow he won't even lay beside us, he loves his own space and his cot. Most nights he'l toddle through and gaze in through the bars at his cot around bath time
Edit: 3 comforters for rotation to wash btw, I don't buy a new one every time because of it being dirty lol!The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -

I can't help with that method I leave the room, for 5 minute intervals. Well I used to anyway. For me, the more I'm there the more worked up he gets, more often than not, even now after 20 or 30 seconds of crying he settles down and goes to sleep.
If he can see me, or I'm touching him he will not settle at allbut that's just the way he is, he's a very independent little sod
and goes to bed at night with no holding etc so I think it all stems from that. xx

Thing is, Aiden has no trouble settling at actual bed time. But its at a ridiculous hour of the night that he wakes up wanting cuddles. I could do the whole leave the room for afew minutes etc if I wasn't half asleep and feeling like absolute crap. After afew times of lying him back down and getting myself back in bed thinking he is asleep, only for him to wake up again - I just tend to give in, especially when I have work the next day just so I can get atleast some sleep.
Plus, I do worry about neighbours etc. I would feel awful if he was screaming on and off for an hour or so and the neighbours were awake.
We have a comforter and a dummy, he won't settle without them. But when he wants picking up, he will push them both away and put his arms up.
He is very random, we can go days, if not weeks, without these bad spells and then they seem to hit.
We shall see what tonight brings. xLittle Man born 11 March 2012 :smileyhea

It is hard, if it's sporadic could it be teething or nightmares? Not that there's much about that you can solve
I apologise if I sound like I have all the answers, I don't mean to come across like that as I'm well aware I don't. I remember all too well the horrible nights when we started sleep training, and I'm only thankful I didn't have to get up and go to work in the morning
Edit, they can be very unsettled when they're taking a development leap, if you google wonder weeks, there is a book/website/app. Sort of explains when they're learning new things how they struggle to shut there brains down. The frontier is never somewhere else. No need to apolyou dont sound like that at all.
It could be teeth I suppose, but I dont want to keep calpol/nurofening all the time iykwim? I think with Aiden, he is still very clingy and upset when I leave him at nursery-because he was on antibiotics for a bit he missed a couple of days when he first started, then it was the xmas break so he hasnt been there that much really as he only does mon-wed. So I think now wherever we are, if I leave the room he thinks I wont be back for a long time
I am pretty sure we could solve the night time wakes if I had the patience to keep going in and out but when I am already knackered its just easier to give in
It doesnt help that he is picking up all sorts since he started nursery so constantly has a runny nose or cough, and hes only just got over his bad chest so I suppose it could be that waking him.
Will look at that website, thanks xLittle Man born 11 March 2012 :smileyhea
