Question for seasoned breast feeders... At what point during a feed do you swap over to the other side? Obviously I don't want to swap over before she's got to the hind milk but how long does it take to get to the hind milk, does anyone know? I'm just curious more than anything, I can't find anything online or in my books that gives any indication.
As others have said 20 minutes is the guideline, or until she comes off herself. If she came off after 10 minutes I would try putting her on the same breast again. That said everyone is different and I found I had enough supply to only feed on one breast at most feeds although I still offered the 2nd side (just in case). And for me at the height of breastfeeding her feeds were only 10 minutes anyway (in the early days it was 30 minutes).

As also mentioned go by the poos. If it's still chicken korma colour you're doing well. Any sign of green then definitely try keeping her on the one side or always starting from the boob she last had to see if that improves things :)

Got DD weighed today. She is now 8lb 6oz, last week she was 8lb 1. so put on 5oz.
Didn't like the lady there, she said the weigh gain was ok but we will review it in a week, she asked how much she was feeding i said past two days, shes been feeding every 2hours and 4hours at night which said carry on doing.
I said about comfort sucking she said if i think she is just take her off.
Also, she started talking to me about making sure i eat and rest, get my 3meals a day and snacking etc, but i felt like she was only saying that because i am very slim, only 5ft 3 and fit into age 12 jeans/size 6/8. (i knw very lucky!) but felt like she was only saying that becuase i'm slim.

So i was hoping to come away feeling more positive but came home feeling a bit sad:(
  • LauraLou that's why I hated getting DS weighed... I felt like they didn't know you, yet judged you... I hated it!! And i'm not the only one...

but your LO gained 6 oz, that's great and you should be very pleased :)

Can I just say how glad I am that Kira started this thread! I'm lurking and learning sooo much from you lovely lot. I'm sure I'll still feel pretty clueless once LO arrives but atleast I might have a teeny bit of an idea, especially where Breast feeding is concerned!
  • Why is it when i feed from the right she comes off awake and ready to play, from the left shes zonked?

    Any ideas?

  • Wow, it's quiet on here today.

Katie and I have been to our first baby group and I quite enjoyed it. Everyone there seemed to be with someone they knew such as a friend or mother. No one initiated conversation with me, but the time went quickly and I spoke to a few people. Katie was all eyes watching every thing going on :D

We got a letter today about baby massage also, we start that in 2 weeks. We had booked on a baby massage course for £35, then I got a phone call on Monday from the local sure start centre saying they were running a course and it's free :j

Tomorrow we are off to Bounce and Rhyme at the local library and meeting a friend there with her 6 month old.

Katie was back at the GP's yesterday with her chesty cough and she has another course of antibiotics to take. Her eczema calmed down but seems to have flared up again :(

Hope everyone is well and getting lots of sleep ;)

So does it then depend on how long the feed is as to whether you start the next feed on the same or the other side? Sometime Amelia will only feed for ten minutes before coming off on her own. I'll change her or burp her or tickle her if she's fallen asleep for example, to see if she wants any more but sometimes she doesn't. So then next feed I'll start on the same side. Other times, especially at this time of night, she'll go for at least 30 mins without stopping, doze for ten mins and then want more. I guess I just haven't figured out yet how you know when one side is 'empty'...

Ellie stops swallowing and i have decided that means the boob is empty! she also screws her face up and cries if i leave her on there as she isnt getting any milk i guess

  • Woken at 3am to a leaky nappy and soaked bed, argh! No wonder as I cluster fed him tonight at 5pm, 7pm and 10pm. Have had to feed him again to make him sleepy. Hopefully this will keep him going to 8am or so :-)
Had a row with OH earlier as he was, for once, making bottles, and I boiled the 'just right' kettle on him. Lol. I had asked but took the grunt as a yes. He was well miffed. Now he knows why I always nag him about not touching the kettle. Maybe I should share the 3am bed and baby changing fun too?
