  • Good evening everyone I am exhausted! Thom was up for hours last night, would not settle at all unless I was holding him! Then I still cant get into the whole sleeping during the day thing - I hate it! If I dont get used to it soon I'll be a zombie...

Health visitor turned up today (she definately said Thursday when we booked it...maybe...I dont know lol ) went through all the paperwork with us then we started talking about LOs constipation. hes been really suffering the past day or so, the midwife suggested giving him cooled boiled water between feeds so we've been trying that and nothing seemed to be happening....well the HV takes off his nappy and of course there is the worst poo he has EVER done! it was everywhere. She looked at me like I was crazy for saying he was constipated..how typical is that! Shes back in two weeks anyway to weigh him as we live a bit out of the way and I cant drive because of csection.

I wonder if I can convince OH to do the 10pm feed so I can go to bed now...although I do want to watch obem...decisions...

  • Did some skin to skin feeding. Eliza fell asleep an hour ago after 9 hours of feeding (she's not had more the 3 x 20 minutes sleep during that time and a few 5 minutes here and there)!

Just got an email... my breast pump arrives tomorrow, which will be great when all this extra milk comes in after her feeding.

Can anyone advise on when, how long etc I should express??? I have no idea what to do!!

Also, anyone else on post-natal clexane?

Lauralou, sorry,I just remembered.... midwife told me to massage when expressing, but she said to just press on skin for a few secs, then move along to next bit and press down. She said rubbing could damage breast tissue.
Julie, my breastpump cuts outautomatically after a set time, but I stop expressing when the milk stops! There's more at times than others- the levels fluctuate.

What are you expressing for? To build up an emergency supply in the freezer? For having someone else to do a feed or 2 a day?

The best time to express is early in the morning as that's when your supply is at it's best. And I was told to express 30 minutes after a feed. How long...just as long as you would feed for..until nothing else comes out I guess :) That's what I did. You want the hind milk as well as the foremilk so empty one breast then express the other.

Don't panic if you can't express...some people just can't. It doesn't mean your baby isn't getting any milk. They say it's good to express with your baby around as that can stimulate your boobs, or try smelling her blanket or something.

  • Giz We are just thinking about DH giving her a feed a day for daddy bonding. Also would like a little for the freezer just in case. Maybe when she's older we'll want more for when we are out and about, but right now I am happy to feed in public and just want to start slow.

Thanks for the advice, it makes sense doing it that way for the right mix of vitamins etc. I suppose if i express too little she'll let us know :)

any suggestions on how to increase my milk supply? Ellie has lost weigh and the health visitor seemed quite concerned
Just keep feeding. Supply and demand...the more you feed the more you will produce. You can try expressing to trick your body into producing more.

What are peoples boobs like if your breastfeeding? Mine seem to have gone saggy? So im starting to think maybe my milk is drying up, shes pooing and weeing fine. I cant seem to express by hand before a feed, just tired after her last feed and a tiny bit came out. Again today shes been unsettled this afternoon, just had a feed.
Saggy boobs is OK, mine were rock hard, but after weaning they went more saggy and I was concerned like you that I was drying up. I asked and a breastfeeding expert told me that it was absolutely normal and I'd be amazed how much milk was actually in there! As for hand expressing...I could pump out 5oz in 5 minutes on a manual pump, but couldn't get a drop out hand expressing! So don't take that as any indication. Keep checking her nappies like you are. Can you hear her drinking/swallowing?

If it's one feed a day, I'd aim for 5oz, you can always top up with more boobie. Try expressing somewhere between 4 - 6am. That's when I got the most (5-6oz). When I expressed in the evening I was lucky to get 2oz sometimes.

If you're like me you won't bother for when out and about - that's the great thing about BFing - it's for lazy people :) No worry about packing bottles etc. It's on tap :)

She normally feeds at 3.30am and 6am (now I know why) will it be okay to do it between feeds without her loosing out on the next feed??

I agree, i'm not sure I will use it out and about :)
