She normally feeds at 3.30am and 6am (now I know why) will it be okay to do it between feeds without her loosing out on the next feed??

I agree, i'm not sure I will use it out and about :)

Sounds about what my DD did at that age. I used to express after the 6ish feed. I'd stay up at that point, watch some TV from the night before that I couldn't keep awake to watch and then express about 30 minutes after the 6am feed, which made it about 7am. She then fed again around 9:30/10am.

Your boobs are constantly refilling themselves even as you feed, so you're technically never empty. If she did lose out a bit on the next feed it will only take your body a couple of days to adjust.

  • Love it, her feed is about 9.30/10ish too. I get up at 6am so will express after the 6am feed!

Thanks for the advice, I feel like I know what i'm doing now :D

Her big brother is going to love feeding her (he's 9)

    Thanks again x

I hope the bottle feeding goes well for you. DD wouldn't take it at all :( I was gutted as OH had offered to do the 10pm feed for me so I could get a bit of sleep, but it didn't work out.

Jacob is seven months already! How the time flies :-) i gave him spaghetti for dinner today which made a lovely mess but i forgot to take a picture.

For the second day jacob has missed his lunchtime feed so he must be eating more solid food than it looks like.

To increase breastmilk i found drinking mackinsons helped (or guiness but i dont like it), apparently fengreek can help too. If you feed on demand then your baby should get you producing just as much as you need but you do have to get used to not knowing if they are really hungry or just comfort sucking. As jacob has got older he is easier to distract and now if there is lots going on he wont feed as he is too busy. It makes feeding difficult in public now as he pops on and off a lot, milk goes everywhere and everyone gets an eyeful!

Lauralou, what time does your lo go to bed? If shes yawning then maybe its time to put her down now? Our evening routine is normally he plays by himself while i make dinner dh comes in at 6 for a cuddle and we eat. Clean up and at 7 its a nappy change, into sleepsuit, dh reads his book and walks him around for five mins. I then go up and feed him, normally he falls asleep feeding.
Thats on a good night though! Yesterday he was tired at 5:30 so we put him to bed at 6. Tonight we gave him a bath and tried to get him to bed at 7:30 but he pooped so it ended up more like 8:30. He was absolutly shattered but fought it till i picked him up and cuddled him. Little so n so

    Hope everyone is ok

    Hi everyone!

Thank you for all the advice on Noah sleeping during the day - sorry it has taken me so long to reply, our internet went down and only just came back on today!

Anyway Noah still not going to sleep by himself during the day (unless we are out and he is in his pram) but he will go to sleep by himself at night. So I figure as long as he is going down ok by himself at night, then having cuddles while he sleeps in the day isnt going to hurt!

    Hiya ladies.

Just wondered, have any of you had labours where baby was back to back?

Had my sweep today, and was told after that baby is still back to back, and that I should use my ball to try turn him before induction on Monday.

Just wondered what will happen if he doesn't turn? Or if you had any tips for turning him? Thanks in advance x

    And Happy Birthday K x

My baby turned during labour ... no science to it but she did so fingers crossed all goes ok. xx

    Thanks for all your info/advice.

What do you do with your LO in the evenings?
DD is awake, does keep yawning. Think her colic is about kick tho as bringing uo her knees. I don;t want to start playing and stimulating her before bed.

We try to take Sadie up between 6.15 and 6.30. On a good day we do massage, then bath, then milk and in cot by about 7 ready to sleep, leave her there to fall asleep herself. If she's not had a good afternoon then it can be just bottle and bed. That has got earlier though based on her getting tired as it used to be about 8ish. I tell my DH off though as he can have a tendency to throw her about and sing loudly at her. I'm all about the quiet before bed!

My LO is 5 months old and I have been expressing about 5oz a day for the past 3 months and storing it in breastmilk bags in the freezer for use when grandparents are babysitting the odd time and also a stockpile for when I go back to work. So far my mum has only looked after her a couple of times and it has all gone pretty well feeding her expressed milk in a bottle - she has been fine with it.

However, last night I went out to a concert and my mum couldn't get her to take any of her feed before bedtime, though she is teething and was also having a bit of a meltdown in my absence. She tried again when she woke up about 9 and she only took a couple of oz, kept pushing the teat out (normally she is a total gannet with the bottle) then went back to sleep. I arrived home at midnight, LO was still sleeping so I went to bed expecting to be woken imminently for a feed. She didn't wake and by 3am my boobs were pretty sore so I expressed about 5oz and put it straight in the fridge.

The next morning we realised that the milk mum had been trying to feed her from the freezer was sour - no wonder she wouldn't take it. I normally freeze the milk within 24h so was a bit puzzled at how it could have gone off. Then we looked at the milk I'd expressed overnight (and tasted - gross i know!). It was also sour even though it was only 6 hours old!

It looks like I have a problem with over production of lipase which can cause breastmilk to go off within a few hours http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/lipase-expressedmilk.html I had no idea this could occur as all the breastfeeding info said that milk keeps for a few days in the fridge and months in a chest freezer - this is a pretty devastating blow as it means all the milk (around 5 litres!) i have stored in the freezer is probably off and I will have to heat treat the milk to have any hope of storing it going forward.

So just a heads up for you ladies planning to express and stockpile, do check and see whether your milk is keeping well, in case you find out the hard way like i have that it isn't necessarily all that straightforward :(

BF advice, how can you tell if they are just sucking for comfort and eating? We had lots of big feeds today, but not suree if near the end of the feed she is just comfort sucking? nipples are now sore :-( now making sucky movements with her mouth and asleep a little
IMO you're still quite early days in terms of BFing experience and all I can say to this is you will come to know with experience. I personally used to take DD off when I felt she was 'messing about', but the BFing expert told me to leave her be until she comes off herself.

As for bedtimes. At a month old our DD stayed downstairs and went to bed with us at 10pm. Think it gradually got earlier...9pm and then 8pm over the weeks. Think it was probably 4 months before we were putting her to bed at a more realistic time of 6pm...which I then pushed forward gradually to 7pm when she weaned (as trying to eat dinner and have some time after dinner before 6 was a big push!) We just sort of took her cue really. Sometimes you've just got to try things out and you might be surprised.

A lot of people give baths before bed, but that's never fit with us, I prefer to do it in the morning. Her night time routine for the past 6 months has roughly been 5:30pm dinner, then playtime, 6:45pm we go upstairs, night nappy on, BF and into bed by 7pm. Other people I know start it much earlier and go upstairs for bath at say 6pm. You will just find whats right for you. I'm sure our routine will change and adapt as she gets older :)
