Question for seasoned breast feeders... At what point during a feed do you swap over to the other side? Obviously I don't want to swap over before she's got to the hind milk but how long does it take to get to the hind milk, does anyone know? I'm just curious more than anything, I can't find anything online or in my books that gives any indication.:j Debt Free 27.07.2011!! :j0

My mw/ bf advisor said past day 5, or once your milk is in, you should should generally single breast feed and not swap, unless baby is super hungry for some reason and comes off breast one by herself. That way you know they are having fore and hind..Married 13/03/10 #1 DD born 13/01/12!!

So does it then depend on how long the feed is as to whether you start the next feed on the same or the other side? Sometime Amelia will only feed for ten minutes before coming off on her own. I'll change her or burp her or tickle her if she's fallen asleep for example, to see if she wants any more but sometimes she doesn't. So then next feed I'll start on the same side. Other times, especially at this time of night, she'll go for at least 30 mins without stopping, doze for ten mins and then want more. I guess I just haven't figured out yet how you know when one side is 'empty'...:j Debt Free 27.07.2011!! :j0 -
Generally, if i get over 20 mins or so feeding on one breast and she falls asleep i'll start the next feed on the other one. If the last feed was only short then i go back to that breast for the next feed. I dont do both breasts during the same feed. Ive never had her come off one and still be hungry.
When we first started breastfeeding i was using the opposite boob each feed regardless of how long the last feed was and found her poos were often green as she wasnt getting to the hind milk. Now ive changed methods almost all poos are mustard yellow.
Also, cora often comes off after 10 mins or so, but after burping and making some more room goes back on quite quickly to finish the feed most of the time, sometimes shes just had enough though, just thirsty maybe rather than hungry so doest need the thicker hind milk?:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -

I always bf on one side as had the Same problem where her poos went green from too much fore milk. In the early days when she fed often I offered same breast over 3 hours then swapped for next few hours.
Flower - poppy can self settle at night but can't in the day, she gets really worked up .0 -
I was told the 20 minute rule, and if she fell off at 20 minutes she swapped sides. She ended up getting too much formilk and getting very upset. Now if she feeds within a hour of the last feed I give her the same side. Also when she finishes a feed I put her in her crib, if she's full she sleeps, if now within 10 minutes she asks for food and goes back on. Since then shes much happier, less fussy and content.
Also, if there is no milk left they will let you know. Eliza freaked out yesterday until I changed side, she is having a growth spurt and emptied a breast... so I wouldn't worry about being empty. We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like.
