Magenta, is SP1 actually installed? If not, download & install it using method 3. Ensure it's installed before trying to download SP2.

    Downloads here:

    SP1 -> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30

    SP2 -> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16468

Hi Waddler, I have now downloaded and installed SP1 a total of 13 times!!!!
I have used both methods: via windows update and via the microsoft downloads.
When I have downloaded it via the microsoft website downloads, it downloads fine but when it comes to the next step, install, I get the message 'Serive Pack 1 is already running'.
Two seconds after I have tried to download and install SP2 via the microsoft website, it downloaded and then I get the message 'not able to install.'
When I look at my list of updates on my computer it lists the sucessful 13 downloads of SP1 but my computer is still asking me 'to install a very important update Sevice Pack 1'.
I have also run the microsoft 'Fix it' programme for 'troubleshooting problems with downloads'.I have done this two times but it has made no difference.
Before my computer was infected by a virus and i had to have it wiped I never had any problems of this kind with downloading or updating.

The upfshot is that I cannot update my internet explorer and consequently cannot open certain sites that I use frequently (including British Gas, and cannot give them the meter reading they have asked me for) and am having to go to Internet cafes to be able to use certain programmes. I cannot even open Internet Explorer Help ( it keeps 'aborting'my attempts to open thisng)

Also another strange thing! my desktop appearance and the way that I see e-mails and web sites etc has completely changed! it is as if it was aimed at a five year old child with hug letters and pages that do not fit on the screen and that cannot be reduced, only closed.

I bought this pc 3 years ago and am going insane with all these problems with it!!!!

    Help please:(:cry:cry:

Magenta, start your own new thread with the following logs & let's see if we can work out what's going on.

Download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:

    Link

After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:
    • Double click DDS to run it.
    • When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop.

Copy & paste the contents of both logs and post them in the new thread. (you may need to split the log over separate posts)

Also download this file and save it somewhere you can easily find it, but don't run it yet - start the new thread first.

  • I use Awast including Firewall. It is best.
  • Hi there.
New post to this forum, so please go easy on me.....

My McAfee AV expires today. I had this on my laptop when I purchased it and fell into the trap of purchasing the 3 PC version 12 months ago when my free verion expired. Having spent the last 90 minutes reading this forum, I now realise the error of my ways and wanted to check with a community of the more technically minded that I'm on the right lines with my next actions.

The steps I've taken so far are:
    1. I've run SecurityCheck as posted by Waddler_8 in post #2413
    The results show that
    i) my Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 is out of date
ii) my internet explorer is out of date (not worried about this because I use firefox)
iii) Java is out of date (despite having consistently let Java update itself every time it asks me to).
I include the full notepad output to SecurityCheck at the end of this post.

    2. Research which AV I want
-) I've used AVG and Adaware in the past and found them to really slow down my computer. I don't mind paying for software if it means that the performance of my PC will improve (which is why I mistakenly bought McAfee a year ago). I use a standard laptop for standard things, so don't need anything which costs the earth and saves me microseconds when I could spend a few quid to save me the frustration of a really slow machine.
-) I've read the "McAfee - where to buy" thread which suggests that Trend Micro Titanium is the best AV according to PC Pro. At £24, I'm happy to buy this.
-) I performed a quick search of AV's and found this that PCAntivirusReviews has a top 10 in which Tred Micro doesn't feature. They recommend VIPRE Internet Security. Without knowing the technical stuff, how does the layman know which software is right for them?

So, as far as I can see, my next steps are:
    1. Remove McAfee
    2. Update my Windows Service pack
    3. Update my Java application
    4. Update IE to IE9 (just in case I need it)
    5. Purchase Trend Micro, or otherwise as advised, and install.

Can anyone suggest something that I've missed or does this seem logical?

SecurityCheck is reporting NO service packs, do you have SP1 installed?

Update IE whether you use it or not.

Java is up to date in the sense that it is the latest update for Version 6 (They recently extended it toFeb 2013), which is still currently supported with public updates so no real worries there.

There is no such thing as the "best" antivirus. Different day, different tests - different results. You''ll find test "winners" vary from site to site and you'll find a multitude of opinions on what is the "best". It's also a fallacy that you need to be paying for antivirus software to be best protected, and as this is a money saving site most generally recommend free AV programs.

Update Adobe Reader or go for an alternative. It is the most exploited 3rd party software bar none.

  • Many thanks Waddler

I completely appreciate that this is a Money Saving site and that I don't need to pay for AV software. My assumption was that paid software degrades PC performance to a lesser extent to that of Shareware. Is there anything in this assumption, or am I still living in the past?

Thanks too for the advice in respect of what I need to do. I'll get onto that today and take particular note to the updates of Adobe Reader.

Generally AV's perform differently with regards to performance system by system - there's no hard, fast rule. Although users may find a new release of a particular AV is bloated in terms of performance, it is in the minds of developers and they try to make them as lean as possible - finding the one that best suits you & your system is the key.

Many of the paid for versions allow a short trial (1- 3 months), so it may be worth trialling them first. With the free ones, if they don't suit, uninstall them - nothing lost.
  • OK - more help needed I'm afraid.....
I've successfully uninstalled McAfee and am trying to update Windows and Adobe before installing a new AV.
I can't for the life of me work out why I can't install the SP1 to my Windows 7 (64 Bit) machine.
I get an error Code 800B0100....and I've looked at the helpfiles. I've installed (and run) the Windows System Update Readiness tool and the Microsoft FixIt but still get the same error message.

    Any suggestions welcome.

Try the standalone installer. Download it, saving it to your hard drive first, then right click & run it as administrator
