So after the changes in rates at 18866 it is cheaper to use 1899 rather than 18866 for UK and mobile calls!!

I guess it is time to reprogramme the speed dial...

You have to remember the connection charge before deciding what is the best for you.

Unless its changed in the last day or so, anything possible lol, 1899 has a 3p connection charge and 18866 its 1p

Which, to my working out, makes 18866 cheaper for UK calls and 1899 for mobile calls.
  • Dialling 18866 before calls is a pain in the ****.

I know that 18866 and 1899 don't offer CPS or plug-in boxes, but I wondered if anyone makes programmable ones?

They can't really be that complex, surely?

(And I know some phones can be programmed to dial a prefix - ours can't though).

Love to hear if anyone knows an automated way of making sure all calls are dialled with a user-defined prefix code.

    Thanks
    Gordon

  • Hi Sunil - looks like we frequent the same boards eh?

Anyway, I've ordered one of the Orchid diallers - should be here tomorrow. It looks much better than the Inventeer one.

Totally programmable via a web interface, with up to 9 carrier codes, time of day routing, automatic insertion of local area code, etc.

    FANTASTIC!! ;D ;D ;D
  • hello people! i'm new here!

    HOWEVER...

just be careful with these free call companies, as it was on the BBC news (few weeks ago) that BT are thinking of charging additional line rental to any customers who are subscribed to companies like this.

this is what stopped me, as i don't want to be hit with a whopping BT bill 6-mths down the line.

    you have been warned....!!

I thought it was the case that it was compulsory for BT to allow customers to route calls through another provider due to their almost-monopoly position.

You are correct.  A search for "BT" on the BBC News website doesn't yield any story in the last month on this topic - only stories about telephone boxes and their (probably illegal) broadband price-fixing ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3618686.stm ) .

BT would not normally be allowed to backdate a brand new tariff and send you a surprise whopping bill. All that has happened is that from July they have forced up the price of line rentel to force up the amount we have to pay if we use an alternate carrier for calls.

Perhaps you were thinking of the Light User Scheme? This discount is (a) provided because BT have to do it by law because of their monopoly, and (b) only intended for elderly/disabled/vunerable people whose telephone is their lifeline. Ever since its introduction it has been a breach of the terms of the Scheme to be on this tariff but then use another carrier, have a mobile phone, broadband etc. That's an abuse of the system (and immoral) and if you're caught then your bills certainly should be backdated to the normal tariff.

Dont make it confusing by worrying about multiple bills - if you cannot handle it stick with BT for line and calls - oh and pay a small fortune too :-)

It's got nothing to do with my 'being able to handle it', thank you very much... >:(

I thought I was making myself clear, but I see you have missed the point of my question. Actually, my concern is that by having my calls routed through three separate providers leaves more room for mistakes to occur. e.g being charged for a call by one provider that actually went through another, and the general extra complexity of making sure all the calls I'm billed for have actually been made by me. I was wondering if other people have found it a problem, or have encountered mistakes on their bills.
