Call18866 now free calls too

Call18866 seems to have reduced it price to 0p/min with a 1p connection to any UK landline at any time.  This is in response to sister company call1899 reducing it to 0p/min with a 3p connection last week.

The pricing currently has only been detected by users checking their bills and hearing the call announcement.  The website has not yet been updated - and until then this is unconfirmed.

If that is what's happened then this really is dirt cheap telephony and a wonderful deal.  Call18866 is alread cheapest line for calling mobiles most (not all) of the time with 10p/min midweek and 2p/min weekends with a 1p connection as well as one of the cheapest for calling internationally.  Watch this space!  If this is confirmed i will try and do a full rewrite of my cheapest home phone piece.

Martin

Update Note:
This is now confirmed by their website. The one other thing to note is they have increased the midweek cost of calling mobiles to 12p/min from 10p/min. Which means call1899 is now cheaper for mobiles.

Will try and do a full article on this!

  • I made a seven minute call and just checked my bill which is showing 1p for my call ;D
  • these landline prices really are getting crazy. ...maybe too crazy.

Must be at the point where people like 18866 are not making money....which in the long term will do us no good .

Whilst everyone wants lower prices etc etc ... we need companies to make enough profit , not only to survive but to prosper and develop.

Why these guys feel they have to go "so low" really makes you wander. 18866 and 1899 .. being the same company ... seemingly competeing with each other and pro-actively driving prices down to levels way below the competition... really think we'll all be worse off in the longer term .

Time martin had a chat with these guys !! ... yes we all want a good deal .. but we want everyone in it for the long term !!.
  • No long term for me, I am quite happy to "phone tart" to get the best deal for me now. I have just signed up to TalkTalk from Onetel because for the next 12 months its the best deal for me. 12 months down the line I will look for the best deal again, as I would for a 0% credit card.
  • What will 1899 do now? (which would then surely be bettered by 18866). 1899, if you need my bank details so that you can pay me to use your system please feel free to contact me. :P

Edit: Sorry, forgot to add: Thanks Martin (and other posters)!! :)
  • Yes it seems to be true I made a call at 5:10 pm and got charged just for the connection (1p) but my earlier call this morning I was charger normally.
When I made my call just after 5, I was a bit shocked to hear the message telling me that my call was free !

This is definately the way forward. The cost today is in making the connection. The duration of that connection should be immaterial.

18866 are great in my opinion !
    To infinity and beyond!
  • Made several calls today and was surprised each time when I got the "Free call" message.

Thought I'd just check on here to see if it was just me, but no, free for all !!!

    Well done 18866.
if i had known then what i know now
  • Used 18866 tonight, I got the phone line disconnected after I chatting with my friend for about 30 mins.... then I redialled again ... and after something like 15 mins and disconnected again !!

Anyone have similar problem ?? ???

I hope the disconnections are not going to become a feature of the service. Presumably, every time you redial, you pay your connection fee again.

I'd soon skip using 18866 if I can't rely on the connection remaining up for the full length of my call.

Yes.  Had that with a 7 minute call this morning.  Bad news.   :(

I've reported it as a fault to 18866 via their webmail facility in the hope it's a 'glitch' they can sort out.

Update 2215 2/9/04. Used 18866 for a 41½ minute UK ‘01’ call this evening without dropout - so it probably was just a ‘glitch’ this morning.

Used 18866 extensively over last 36 hours. All UK calls have been FREE, and only 1p connection charge is showing on bill!

NO PROBLEMS with disconnections and never have since I started using 18866 11 months ago!
