Forget third party... usually more expensive than fully comp!!
What I did was to put an excess on the policy that was the same approximate value as the car. (Or more.) In my case, that's £1500. Effectively this means I'm only insured Third Party (which isn't subject to excesses) so in the event of a claim that's my fault I lose the car, but under the Fully Comp umbrella, I have the added bonus of windscreen cover, and a MUCH lower premium. And it encourages me to drive carefully, which can't be a bad thing.
Volvo V40 1.9D, Salford M6, Male, age 31, 9yrs NCB, with no recent accidents or points.
Elephant knocked about £250 off for that last year, and I only paid £453 renewal this year which is actually the cheapest insurance I've ever had in 13 years of driving! And I think it's only the second time I've ever renewed a policy. So well done Elephant. Nearest comparison site quote was Admiral for £800 although that was only a £500 xs, but still....0 -
Out of interest I have always found classic cars to be cheaper to insure - and they dont have to be expensive to buy either. Even a well equiped car from the 70s or 80s can be cheap to buy (Merc E class or BMW 7 series), three of mine have air conditioning (one with climate control) 3 have leather seats, and all four have power windows and mirrors.
I am male 36 years old and have four old bangers, none of them particularly slow or insurance friendly and they are all insured fully comp, unlimited mileage and agreed value... for £320 for all four.
And look at the engine sizes, smallest engine 2.0 litre Porsche 924,
2x Volvo 260 GLE with 2.7 litre V6 and a 1978 Cadillac 7 litre.
Insurer is AON classic.
Now I am old, but my wife is only 23 years old, has no UK license (only an American one) and does nt know how to drive a manual gearbox, but she is insured as a named driver fully comp on my 1988 Volvo 740, this is a 2.3 litre 190bhp TurboIntercooler petrol car, why so cheap?
It is not the sort of car that shows up on the insurers radar. Statistically classic cars dont get involved in accidents because the owners drive them differently than owners of modern vehicles.
It does nt matter that you can buy an MG and drive it like a loon, the insurance could well be under £100 a year fully comp!0 -
OK so I had to spend quite a bit of time on the interweb and phone but it was well worth while.
£121 more pm to spend on beer:-
Reduced car insurance from £1,823 to £985 = £69 per month saving. (For two cars going to Admiral multi car including breakdown cover - get in!) :rotfl:
Reduced house insurance from £600 (robbers!!!) to £215 (Churchill) = £32 pm saving - OK so I reduced the level of cover a bit, but why pay for cover when you'll never make a small claim because of excesss and loss of no claims discount! :j
Changed utilities provider saving £20 pm (now with First Utility - hope their customer service is good??? :T
And I get a free box of wine for the Utilities change!!!
Cheers Martin :beer:0 -
Couple of minutes searching found Aviva car insurance who were giving discounts, plus £75 cash back through Quidco, bringing insurance down to £112, however, I then got a £50 voucher to buy a case of wine from Naked Wines (available even to existing members)....very happy!0

I've followed all the steps on the car insurance page but still can't get it below £500 even tho I've more than 20+ years clean licence, 7 years NCB, no points etc and am 39!! What the hell to do next and how the hell to get prices as low as quoted here?!0

hey guys, just thought I would add to the great car insurance hunt lol.
Unfortunately martins system did not work for me this year, I tried all routes, the only thing I have not done is ring insurers by phone instead (which is what I normally do each year), my goal every year is to just beat last years premium.
Right anyways my details Male, West Midlands, 24 yrs, 1.4 golf 2006 standard, 4000 miles year, student & named driver parent, fully comp, 4 yr license, 6 ncb (bonus accelerator policies).
Last year Aviva £572 premium inc legal cover and guaranteed ncb. £550 excess
This year renewal price from aviva...£613 same exc.
Searching around cheapest alternative was Hastings essentials £645 excess (LOL) premium £612 odd
Aviva direct as new customer £893.
So what I did was ring Aviva spoke to guy about the policy (this was before I even got quotes, I ended up renewing today and then finding quotes today but no one to beat) I asked him if it can be cheaper as I want to beat last years premium he said no first...then checked details and said I could save £30 odd by changing guaranteed to protected, which I did.
And then if you have any other policy with aviva or even a shareholder you get a further 15% on base premium that saved me another £79.
So my great car insurance hunt this year I got for £504 with a £550 excess. Wohoo beat last years premium by £68! YEY :T
Good luck to any one who is also trying to find theres.
p.s. I did find in most cases it was cheaper with me and my mom overall, in comparison to just me, just me & dad, me, dad & mom. And I saved £30-50 by changing from mature student to just student (surprisingly I would have thought a mature student would be less)

When the renewal notice arrived in March for our Peugeot estate I thought it must be for both cars (the other's an old Skoda estate) as it was so high. (Last year we just had to go with the same company as our daughter had to renew for us while we were in Australia.) By using Martin's tips, I managed to go to Aviva on their current deal and insure both cars (comprehensive with 3 named drivers) for less than the price of one. Thanks, Martin - and I'll make sure I check again next year.0

Multiple car insurance due 1st May. Tried sites as listed in order by Martin but way too expensive. My renewal from Admiral was £742 for 3 cars, me, wife and daughter. After having no luck I tried Aviva as suggested and today I have paid £546 for slightly better service plus I got £35 off for having shares.-a result I think!!:T0

Earlier this year AA renewal quote for our breakdown was £168. After a bit of comparison site searching I found RAC quote for £95. Phoned to cancel AA, but they agreed to match the RAC price, so saved £73.
Then this month our AA renewal quote for car insurance was £277, but again I looked on a few comparison sites and found M&S quote for £218. Phoned to cancel AA and again they agreed to match M&S price, so saved £59.
Total saved £132 and I didn't need to change insurer. I'm pretty happy with that.0
