It's worth bearing in mind when you ring Virgin up that they know what the quality of your broadband would be like if you moved, based on your distance from the BT exchange.

When we rang the lady said that we 'couldn't move' as we would only get 0.5mb service from BT (or any other provider). She therefore could not offer us much in the way of discounts as Sky could not compete. We did get a free TIVO box included. She also had all the details on our internet usage, when we use the phone etc. Off the top of my head, I think we are saving a £1 a month but do have some extras thrown in.

Theres a VERY easy answer to that - Mobile broadband - someone like Three (if you get good signal) can deliver a great service of up to 15gb a month.

This they cannot dispute...15GB a month is reasonable if you don't stream video excessively or watch youtube lots.

Worth keeping in your back pocket on negotiations when in poor BT areas :)

  • Currently paying VM £33 per month for TV M, Bband L, Phone L (including free 0856 and 0870 nos) and phone line rental. This was going to increase to £38 per month during April for the same package.

Had a phone call today from VM retentions team offering me :

    - Free Tivo box & installation.
    - TV M+
    - Bband L
    - Phone L (including free 0856 and 0870 nos) and
    - Phone line rental

for £29 per month for a 12 month contract.

Now in a quandry whether to stay with VM or move over to Sky for £27 per month for a similar package.

    Happy dilemna though !

    I am currently on
    TV - L
    Phone - Talk unlimited
    Talk 08 - free calls to 0845 0870 up to 200 mins a month
    Caller display
    BB - L
    Line rental
    37.99

    I have been offered

    TV M+
    Tivo 500
Phone M (only weekend calls free)
    Talk 08
    Caller display
    BB - L
    Additional V-HD box
    Line rental
    £33.49

Just need to decide if Tivo & additional box are worth the downgrade in phone & TV. It doesnt seem we will lose many channels that we actually watch but I do use my phone a lot. However I do have a mobile phone contract £9.19 a month (with unlimited texts) which has 200 free minutes a month that I do not currently use, so I could use these in the week, and use landline at weekends. So perhaps I should, its a no brainer really with saving £4.50 also ? Wish I was more decisive :o

Re my earlier post. I made a decision to take their offer at £33.49 and now they are saying I can't have that price as half price line rental offer has ended  This is not what they said earlier.

Originally I only wanted an extra box. Current package £37.99 in contract until July. They said £47.49 plus installation £49.95 for extra V-HD box which I turned down. I rang again and they said extra box plus Tivo but downgrade phone & tv £45.40 free activation and half price installation. Then this afternoon they said £33.49 and half price installation.

I have taken the package but for £39.40 and their prices are increasing from 1 april so it will be £41.65. Curse my indecisiveness.... I should have snapped his hand off earlier when he offered me £33.49 !!!

As my original contract was not due to end until July I couldnt threaten to leave :(
