  • Is anybody able to offer any suggestions how I can get talktalk to fix my dead phone line? It has been dead since last tuesday(26th October), Have called the so called customer services repeatedly every day since then being told different things each time i phone. These ranging from it has been fixed on the 25th to an engineer is currently working to fix the problem but this is only when they can understand english or don't hang up.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Sign up to the members forum - there are online TT staff there who are generally far more effective at getting things sorted out than the phone support. Forum here http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=41
  • I have been without a phone or internet for 7 days since talktalk had a 'power issue' in the area

After this was 'resolved' I still have no service, I've been phoning them most days from my mobile, spending ages on the phone each time and being assured it's being looked into, followed by a text next day to say it's been fixed and going through the same cycle again

Last night when I when I was in a state of desperation anyway, Sky came to the door to try and sell me a phone/tv package - so I jumped at the chance

This morning this appears to have got talktalks attention, as they phoned me up, offering a free month, a free 3g dongle to keep me going and promising me an engineer will be sent out within 28 days

When I explained I had already signed up with Sky as they were not providing me with a service, they informed me they are going to charge me a £282 cancellation fee as I renewed my contract a couple of months ago - unless I give them the full 28 days to restore service
  • Fed up with TalkTalk. Using Virginmedia instead
  • Do not use Talk Talk Broadband. Very unreliable. Use Virginmedia instead
  • Applied over 3 months ago. No or only limited issues
  • I signed up to the 'free broadband' TalkTalk package 2 years ago, and was informed that even though it WASN'T free, freedom was coming, probably only a matter of weeks... I believe it was upwards of a year before TT actually rolled out the free BB on my exchange. Not happy about that! Then, for some reason, they switched my phone tarrif to one that encompasses international calls, even though I never make international calls, and ever since I have been getting phone bills of £40-60 per month (just call charges), because I have to call my daughter's mobile a lot (she has no landline and no money), and TT not only charge a lot for landline to mobile calls, they also have a connection charge for these calls! Now, to top it all, when I have finally come to my senses and decided to switch to Orange, I find that I can't just switch - TalkTalk put tags on the phone line so that I am having to pay £110 to the Post Office to get my BT line reconnected, which will take minimum 2 working weeks, before I can even begin the switching process! TalkTalk could not have made me more angry if they'd tried. This is flaming outrageous, and I consider £110 a cheap price to escape from this company's clutches!

Welcome to the MSE forums Kinetikat.

Obviously, you don't need a new line because you already have one - it's just that you are on Talk Talk's LLU'd service (connected to their equipment at the exchange).

Hence, although it should not be the case, others' experiences have shown that the only way to migrate your line rental to another company is to return to BT (free of charge on a 'return to donor' basis), agree to a 12 month contract with them, and then move again after 12 months (or pay breach of contract charges to BT if you really want to move within that 12 months).

I don't know what Talk Talk charges for calls to mobiles but you did, of course, have the option to use 18185's freephone gateway number to make your calls to mobiles from your Talk Talk line for 5p connection + 10p/minute weekdays or 5p connection + 6p/minute weekends.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Orange only accept transfers from compatible BT Lines so it wouldnt make any difference if TT could release it.

That's the point. It's not a 'compatible BT line' until after it has been disconnected from Talk Talk's equipment at the exchange and Talk Talk will not release it until another company takes it over.

    Catch 22.
