You can, but you can't go abroad as you can't actively be seeking employment and be ready to go for an interview if one comes up (say 24 hours notice) if you're in another country.
thats true and its a daft rule because someone living in kent would find it easier to get home from france than they would northern scotland.

The holiday was booked and paid for before I started on jobseekers. I missed my sign on day and said I had an interview. I know I was stupid just don't want to get a criminal record for being on holiday for one week. Should I just be truthful and hope it will be okay.
you will probably lose a weeks money then. you should have just filled in a going away form and gave the details of somewhere in the uk as they never bother contacting people when they are away.

Jobseekers is paid to those who are actively seeking work in the UK. France doesn't come into it.

Just what I was going to say, bestpud. I can't believe how many people are advocating the OP tells even more lies and gets even deeper into the mire.

OP, just tell the truth if asked and take your punishment (if any), like a man, learn from the experience and carry on with the rest of your life. You won't go to prison.
they are f**ked mainly because they didnt turn up to sign on claiming they had an interview which they then didnt turn up for. that is why they have been called in. they will have checked to make sure they did go to an interview. the question is what answer could they give that will workout best for them?

The best possible answer is to be truthful, and not find an answer to fit the deception for their own favour.

I believe it is, yes, because you would be obtaining money (sick pay) through deception. I'm not sure how it works if you don't receive sick pay, but it's obviously cause for disciplinary action.

But either way, deliberately deceiving the DWP in order to obtain benefits (financial gain) is fraud by any stretch of the imagination! You may choose to try and justify it, but it is still fraud.

Likewise, you do not have to be thrown in prison to be guilty of fraud.
dont be so holier than thou. the rules surrounding holidays are stupid. the jobcentre never checks up or contacts you about a job when you are away. you are advocating stopping someones money just because they had a week away in greece, just because the rules say so. dont be such a......

I was told I could not claim JSA for a week when I was at Residential School for my Open University course, because it meant I was not available for work if a job came up. The adviser was so harsh about it I wouldn't have dared float the idea of fancying a holiday !!!!
again an example of stupid rules. you should have just said you were going away. technically you wouldnt have been lying.

Probably yes, but thats hardly the point is it? There are a lot of people who tell lies to get benefits, the OP has only been a bit sneaky but as it is bothering her I think she knows really what she has to do for her own sake!

Personally I hope she gets no more than a bit of a telling off, if that, I think she has punished herself already.

people are allowed 2 weeks away. people like quoting the rules here so there you go i have quoted one. anyway people can spend some time jobseeking while away cant they?
it may interest people to know that while on the old new deal people were allowed 10 days holiday and werent required to do jobsearch while on holiday. they were also allowed 10 days sick(holiday) were again they werent required to do jobsearch.

well yeah the truth is probably the best answer in her case. however in general people should do whatever is best for them in a situation were what they have done wrong is extremely minor. infact so minor that it shouldnt be against the rules.
