Can an affair ever have a happy ending?

Having read the last few pages, I can now see why someone might start a relationship with someone else whilst still being married (abusive relationship etc). But even in this situation, the original marriage should be finished asap, and the 'affair' in the open. Even these scenarios do not allow for lying and cheating for years, imho.
As for forgiveness? Well anyone can make a terrible mistake, when perhaps they are crippled with anxiety and fear, or unhappy for other reasons, not necessarily to do with their marriages. If they truly want to make their marrage work, and so does their spouse, then it can be done. An affair does not have to mean the end of a marriage. I know at least two couples who have made it work.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Sure they can make it work but has the relationship not then been tarnished, lack of trust, obvious lack of respect for the partner if the affair took place in the beginning, knocks the self confidence , questions your overall view on things, the relationship, the meaning of marriage, the point of being in love, exclusive to each other, it has so many ripples, it effects future decisions, plans, family, friends, always at the back of the mind, corroding away....0

Basically if your looking to play about then at least have the decency to split up first.Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.0
