Hi everyone,
I'm getting closer towards my plans for the kitchen. Been to a few places, wickes / magnet / homebase / ikea / independent supplier.
I've settled on the unit style I want and the worktops.
Meepster the range from magent I'm looking at is:
Urban Lineaire
Ash / Oak / Iroko timber worktop. (need to confirm yet).
I've made two plans myself of the base cabinets only, with some dimensions on. Includes:- American FF
- Double oven (stuggling to pick which one, probably Bosch or Neff - any recommendations people?), pull out drawer or cupboard underneath)
- 5 burner gas hob.
- Pull out drawers (one will pull out under the breakfast bar worktop)
- The breakfast bar will be made from the worktop with nothing under it to allow drawer to pull out and stools to go under / bit of a design feature.
The door on the right is VERY close to the FF, though the door is not installed yet, so has the reveal to be plasterboarded, then the door frame itself. I'm hopeful it will fit ok, as my measurement is to the stud centre, so probably another 50mm safety. Of course I need to worry about the door opening out onto the FF but I could put in a stopper on the reveal / frame or something....or just be very careful! hehe
Also, I know the drawer under the breakfast bar will probably a bit of a pain to get some things, though drawers store more, and it will look good next to the other 800 drawer - though I welcome thoughts and help on this.
Meeps, what do you think of my idea? If you get 5 mins to look at it.
On the wall with the water appliances I will have corner units above also.
Opinions welcomed, though I think I'm getting there!!
P.s. hope you can read the sizes ok, as I took a screen grab to reduce the file etc, and quality os a bit pants!
Thanks!"The future needs a big kiss"0 -
Hi Andrew,I don't like the position of the breakfast bar right in front of the main entrance to the kitchen from the hall. It would drive me nuts as everytime you walk into the kitchen you have to go around it. IMHO if it's going to be in front of a door i'd put it in front of the garage door where it's less disruptive to access to the room or on the opposite side so access to the kitchen is unimpeded by it.
That doesn't worry me. I've given it quite some thought, and for me it's the most appropriate layout. Forunatley I've been in a neighbours house who has this layout and it works fine - in fact it's never been to the extent where I've been bothered / considered it being in the way. Furthermore I will be mostly going in and coming in the house from the garage door - as otherwise I wouldn't have put the door in.I'd also not have a washer/drier as you can't wash another load of washing before the last lot is dried. Better to have seperate tumble drier and washer.
I guess this is worth thinking about. Does a combined washer drier only release washed items once they are actually dried? Surely not? I'd only wish to have the washer /drier, on the purpose I needed to dry something quick, otherwise I'll hang my clothes on the washing line / horse.I don't get the point of having a seperate drinks fridge when you've got a huge american fridge/freezer...but then i don't get the need for these huge american f/f jobs anyway!
I wouldn't have a bin in a cupboard either.
Yeah, well I threw that in for fun really. Not very mse. I do want the large FF though. Once of my thoughts on this: a built in FF - first I need to buy the ff, which in it's size by comparison to the american style is smaller. Then I need to buy the cabinet that surrounds it. So indulging in one of these AFF isn't much more. I will make a lot of use of the cold drink feed and the ice.Other thing to bear in mind is where are you going to vent the extractor to (unless you recirculate...which do pretty much sod all from experience!)
Well I had planned to pump it across the ceiling - it's exposed at the moment so could be piped in. However a couple of sources have mentioned the distance for it is not really worth while - around 3m distance isn't effective? Not sure on that one.So urm sorry but i've torn the design to shreds...though it's better to do that now than after it's done i guess!
No worriesIt's most definitely worth thinkign about these things as you say and discussing them before anything is finalised.

OK, first impression...a see a couple of small problems...
The USA F/F is too close to the door. You need to have it AT LEAST 75mm away from the door, otherwise you wont be able to pull the drawers in the freezer out fully.
Also, in the second plan, the hob is far too close to the oven housing. You need to have a minimum of 150mm between the hob and the housing (ideally 300mm) to allow any pan handles space to be turned to the side. You really don't want pan handles hanging over the other hob areas...
So basically, what I am saying is - you need to re think the whole wall where the oven/hob are going to be. The other side is pretty much there thoughIf it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Hey meeps!
Thanks for the reply - I know you're busy!!!OK, first impression...a see a couple of small problems...

Sorry - my diagram is misleading, the door will be in a recess - so where it sticks out in my diagram (off the wall) it's actually wrong - it would be set back if anything), and the green bit in there measures 100mmAlso, in the second plan, the hob is far too close to the oven housing. Yes - now I did think this when I put the drawers in, and to be fair I would prefer a gap on the side next to the ovens anyway, as if I want to take something out of the oven and put it down I will have a spot in between oven and hood. however, by going for drawers I would imagine I need to have the hob in the middle of one unit...or can it straddle two units? (hope this makes sense?). I really want to keep drawers, not cupboards. I could throw in a 300mm draw I suppose, that would space the hob from the oven a bit. Then I could perhaps have two slightly smaller drawers alongside - say 700's? (I'm not fully up on the dimensions possible in which drawers come in) They just seem so much more user friendly for accessing things, rather than having to move everything when you want an item at the back!So basically, what I am saying is - you need to re think the whole wall where the oven/hob are going to be. The other side is pretty much there though
Thanks - I'll modify my plan a bit more to be a better reflection if I get the chance - pictures are much better for describing!
Do you know if the Urban Lineaire can use linear cornices' or pinths? In the brochure a they are rounded examples. I only want straight items, not curves - especially on end pieces.
Cheers!! :T"The future needs a big kiss"0 -
Yeah, you can straddle two units, you just have to trim down the carcase eges. Done it myself many a time.
You wont get drawers in 700mm. They come one 500mm and 600mm, or pan drawers in 800mm and 1000mm.
And you don't have to have curved elements on the Urban Lineaire range, there are standard straight end panels and cornice etcIf it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Right, so the pan drawers will be deeper? Is there an option to have a cutlery style drawer at the top in here. I've see these drawers that open out, that have drawers / compartments within them. Basically Am I making sense at all? :S hehe. And you don't have to have curved elements on the Urban Lineaire range, there are standard straight end panels and cornice etc
Brill - is there a difference in price? (obviously hoping the linear ones are cheaper! hehe)"The future needs a big kiss"0 -

You can get pan drawers with the internal drawers, but you'd need to watch out if you are straddling the two units

Yeah, the straight ones are cheaper

Meeps,
Do you fancy having a go adjusting the design to include the drawer sets? ***ONLY if it's not too much hassle****
Then I can get a list of the parts necessary.
I now need to look at appliances.....:o really not enjoying kitchen shopping as there's too many choices for comparison. I'm thinking of bosch or neff equipment ideally. Any recommendations on appliances?
Gas hob
Double oven...or maybe 2 singles one above the other? to fit into a cupboard that has a lower pull out drawer / cupboard.
Washer / Drier
American FF
Dishwasher
Wine / drinks fridge
And great news about the cornice bits and bobs being cheper - yay!"The future needs a big kiss"0 -
No worries, I'll get on it tomorrow if I get the chance!
As for appliances, well, it all depends on how much you want to spend lol
I would nearly always recommend Neff, but they can be a bit pricey. Of course you could go for Neff for the appliances on show and Bosch for the appliances hidden behind doorsIf it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
