The card would still have to have been placed in a machine in order for the till to produce a receipt to be signed by the customer, and thus the card is still apt to be cloned, and subsequently abused.
Money was withdrawn from VICTIMS accounts by means of their PIN and cloned card at ATMs accross the globe.
The perpetrators by your own admission couldn't have used cloned cards at Chip & PIN complaint retailers and by not using a PIN, no access to cash.

My GM Visa card was hit for £765 a few days ago. All the dodgy transactions has taken place in the Neeta Shopping Centre in Fairfield, Sydney. I understand it is a pretty dodgy area. Someone treated themselves to new clothes, perfume, jewellery, and bought some spares for their car. I was only alerted to a problem when my wife was asked to cofirm her identy by phone while buying some bedsheets for £26. The people in the queue behind her were not best pleased. I immediately checked my account online and reported the dodgy transactions.
I must say that HFC bank were terrific. Card cancelled and new one arrives two days later, and this morning they phoned to say that a cheque for the whole £765 was on the way, as my account had been paid in full by direct debit.
Analysing my transactions, the only one made outside of my usual pattern was at a petrol station in Canterbury, Kent, the day before the fraud. I only used it as I was low on fuel. Anyone else experienced the same thing in this area? Please let us know.
Great forum, and I have learned a lot since finding it.0 -

I just ran through the entire thread and whew!! Here, I was happy about opening an account with a maestro. I will stick to cash as much as possible. Those pennies are not that much nuisance.
A couple of points about online shopping:
- Though websites require billing address along with card details, there is no matching (based on my experience). I renewed my subscription without changing my billing address (though I had informed the bank about change in address). Similar thing happened with the same website but address change was in US.
- Some websites (e.g. Experian - at least for online order of hard copy) don't require billing address - again reinforcing the redundancy of billing address.
And you always give away account number / sort code when you write a check!!
If somebody uses your DEBIT card fraudently, do you have any chance of refund ? I am a bit unclear on that. You are covered in US.0 -
Lord Goldsmith was interviewed on Radio4 at lunchtime today. He seems to be getting the message that FRAUD is getting out of hand.
http://www.pm.gov.uk/output/Page7466.asp
He recons FRAUD is costing every person, man woman & child, in the country 330 GBP per year.
Let us hope he can put a bit of backbone into the police and the banks.
Allowing the banks to shuffle the losses between customers and merchants achieves nothing, until the losses are screwed out of the criminal scumbags involved, we, you and me, are still paying.

PS BBC1 is investigating the banks on Monday at 21:00 - find out what they really think of you their customers.0 -

Yes, of course, and that's what they suggested, but I asked for a cheque, as I need the cash to pay some bills.0 -
Hi all, hope there's room for a new post-er!
I recently paid off my credit card and thought there was nothing more to pay so I cancel my direct debit... a few weeks later I receive a letter through the post saying a payment is overdue which I though was strange so I rang Egg. Turns out there's been £20 a month coming off my card since June 2006 and £209.78 has been withdrawn by 'OAKTRELLA'..... which I have absolutely no idea what it is, who it is and what I'm paying for!!! Has anyone ever heard of OAKTRELLA and call me silly but I've no idea where I stand on this, can I claim my money back? How do I go about disputing this? I've spoken to Egg and they say I need to try and stop the payments myself - how can I if I don't know what they are?!?!?!?!?!? HELP!!
Thanks for listening, I hope someone can give me a few tips, I'm really worried abou this
