I had 4 transactions on my debit card totally £600 that was used on betonbet.com ! I got the money back in a few days but its proving more difficult to get back to 'overdraft' charges applied back to my account by A&L but im sure i'll get there in the end.

I never throw out statements, always cover PIN, always use secure sites (i hardly ever use this card online) so im really intruiged how they got the number

Very strange-I've had two debit card transactions with betonbet.com for £350 total the other day as well, and I was completely shocked. This has never happened to me before, so I'm very confused especially as I'm so careful.

Did yours happen to be a Visa Abbey card?

(edit) I just got an email from betonbet after contacting them, and they've told me the name of the person who made the transaction and where she lives-thankfully meaning she didn't have my address.

My cousin is a policeman in the same area so I know that it was dealt with properly. I know that they got loads of CCTV footage of the card being used in a department store but don't know if it has progressed any further than that yet. I suppose that it might not have been the person that actually stole the card - I don't know much about it but I assume that stolen cards are sold on to other people.

When our card numbers were used a couple of months ago it was really wierd because lots of the transactions were to Swinton (I think they are insurance people) and one of the transactions was a refund from them!

Just found out I have about £600 of on-line gambling payments on my credit card.
Only time this card has been used recently was to purchase an item flagged as a good deal in these here forums!

Used your plastic in a Petrol Station? Check your statement.

    From The Times:

Fraud experts said last week that they would not use their cards at petrol stations because of a spate of cloning cases since January.
Criminal gangs are thought to be targeting garages because they are often manned by only one person and have a large turnover of staff.

Believe I mentioned this months ago. It's been happening from as early as October 2006 and puts the Shell fiasco in the shade.
  • Hmm - time to ditch those chip-and-signature cards then.....

Think about it Paul. Read the article from The Times.

It's ATMs the crooks are hitting. Probably using old phone cards, hundreds of them, standing at a cash machine, feeding one in after the other.

At least if they clone a chip and signature card they're using 1 at a time and the clone at least has to look like a genuine card, the fraudsters has to face down a human, not a machine.

    PLUS:

"Take chip and Pin for example. On 13 February 2006, if a card was swiped in a store and a signature obtained at the time of authorisation, the majority of the risk lay with the card issuer.

"After 14 February, with chip and Pin now mandated, the real issue is that the risk of fraud lies with either the retailer or the cardholder, not the bank.

Warning from security firm 3rd Man.

    Bin that PIN. :rotfl:

    I did. Did you?

Fraudsters fit “skimmers” to the chip and pin machines, sometimes with the knowledge of the petrol-sta-tion employee, or when he or she is distracted. These devices read customers’ card details and allow the criminals to make counterfeit copies. The chip cannot be cloned, but crooks can use the cards abroad in countries that have not adopted the chip and pin system.

No it's not. ATM's (in this country) look for the presence of a chip. If there's no chip they get rejected (as would a valid CNS card I suspect.) All they're cloning is the magstripe on the back of the card, and copying it to a blank for use in other countries.

Chip and Signature is not going to protect you from this any more than Chip and Pin. Simply because the clone doesn't have a chip, nor is the chip required for a transaction.

I'd guess a cloned CNS card looks much the same as a cloned CNP card. Neither will have a chop.

Now tell me again how CNS saves you from this hassle?
