I have had several fraudulent transactions, some online and it was on my VISA ELECTRON card from BARCLAYS, I was watching Watchdog the other day and saw the bit about Chip and Signature, How do you go about requesting one of these cards, and can the Bank refuse to send one out/Retailer refuse to accept it?

    Thanks

Yes the banks can refuse to send any sort of card to anyone, but from experience the last thing they want to do is lose a customer.

Tell you're card issuer you want a Chip & Signature Card. It depends on who you get on the day at a call centre or even in branch. Lots of call centre and branch staff have no idea that chip and signature cards exist. If you're put off by the first response ask to speak to the supervisor or customer service and persist. Don't disucss your reasons until you feel you're speaking to the right person, tell them you feel insecure using a PIN and you no longer feel they (retailers banks) can keep your PIN secure.

    Use

Retailers have no idea if the card presented to them is Chip & PIN or Chip & Signature.

It is only when the card has been authenticated, rather than asking you to type your PIN, a transaction slip is produced for you to sign in the normal manner.

Every card I use with a Visa / MasterCard logo is Chip & Signature - no problem using them at all.

    Hope this helps.
  • My partner has been the victim of chip and pin credit card fraud to the sum of £1100 these transactions were taken out of atm machines in our own town, one of these transactions happened when we were away on holiday, yet banking onbudsman still sided with Barclaycard. Barclaycard then told her that it was up to her to prove who had taken the money have you got any advice on how to pursue this. We have already written to trading standards who have not yet responded.

The banking ombudsman must have had a good reason for siding with Barclays - because they have clear guidelines from the Consumer Credit Act about what you are liable for and what you aren't.

    See my post here:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=4279777#post4279777

So I think we need some more facts about this:

    1) Where was the card when you were on Holiday?
    2) Was the PIN with it?
    3) Did anyone else have permission to use it? (e.g. kids?)

Based on my post above, you could, in theory (and I'm not a lawyer - do not take this as legal advice) sue Barclaycard under the Consumer Credit Act. But given the Ombudsman operates under that law too - you'd expect they'd explored the story fully and you don't fall under it.

    Woollyy,

Your partner can get instant help by clicking on to the following link:

Let us fight your Chip & PIN Fraud Case.

Also inform Watchdog soonest - Click here.

If you're a member of Which? (formerly the Consumers Association) tell them too. They tend to tow the banking line on this one.

In theory what MPH80 is saying is absolutely true. In practise this just isn't happening, as I'm sure your partner is well aware.

In the meantime I'd advise your partner and anyone else to get yourself Chip & Signature Credit Cards. This will never happen if you continue to sign and Bin your PIN.

Chip & Signature offers better protection for the the consumer than Chip and PIN. (source Watchdog).

    Good luck.

Absolutley - No PIN = no access to Cash Machines (for you or the crooks).

You can't get cashback with a Credit Card but you can and do with your Debit Card - no problem.

    Hope this helps.

Cool, thats good in one way at least. I have a debit card and I am waiting for a chip + sig card, I thought it would still have a pin on it for ATM's like the old cards, but that is a good thing as pointed out on watchdog...

At least people can still get cashback

  • We noticed fraudulent transactions on our credit cards earlier this year. I started the day after we had been to London. I'm fairly certain that the number was taken - we bought a london bus tour type ticket and looking back there was something dodgy about it.

The card was a Halifax card and they were next to useless, they weren't interested in where we thought it had happened, they said we would get a call from their fraud department - they didn't tell us it would be over a week before we heard from them! My OH got really stressed out by the whole thing.

They also didn't think it odd that we had activated and used new cards they had sent us and transactions were still going through on our old card number!

I think I just accept that it is the way of the world and it will probably happen to us again in the future but it really got to my OH.
