In other words, there should be no way to profit by gambling using a stolen card/stolen card details.0 -

They profit by losing the money to another player which is either themselves or a mate0 -
Aha silly me - I assumed that online gaming was against "the house".0

But surely the money has to be credited to them via one of the payment systems (Visa/MasterCard etc, etc). Then the proceeds are paid into the fraudsters account - this must be all about banks, who provided these accounts Knowing Their Customer. i.e. There should be an auditable trail.0 -
netlang wrote:I paid by credit card at a restaurant last week on a card I have not used for 4 months (I had a gut feeling about the establishment) 3 days later £490 to an online gambling site. My credit card company have been really good and have credited the fraudulent use but I am unsure how they did it as the card was in my sight at all times! I did punch my PIN into a wireless terminal and I think this was being intercepted/snooped on.
Yesterday, 7 cards were cloned after visiting a local petrol station who were raided by the Police (arrest took place) back in the summer. So it looks like maybe cash at the petrol station too!
Restaurants are cash only for me from now on.
Hi Netlang,
So you think "My credit card company have been really good" - I wish I could agree. Perhaps you would like to name your CC company? Did your CC company even report this crime to the police? You got off very lightly, in my case I've wasted half a day of my life sorting out a similar crime. If you are a victim of real identity fraud expect to spend 4 - 6 weeks of your life trying to get back to normal. How long was it before you reported this crime to your CC company. Less than the 3 or 4 days, while there was still a chance of recovering the 490 GBP ? Fraud destroys trust and contains the seeds of destruction of our way of life. Do you believe that your CC company totally believed you, or is it possible that now there is a little mark on your file?
You could have been part of the crime, winning back your own money at the gaming tables. It is a bit like making an insurance claim; the first time they will pay out but you will have lost one "life".
Today, who has got the 490GBP, my bet it is the crook? Do you think he is feeling pleased with himself and might try it again? So who has lost the 490 GBP ? I'm not sure but if you bank with Nationwide, a mutual organisation, I've paid some of that and so might have you.
The British are by far the most indebted people of Europe and if something nasty happens in the global market, the house of cards will collapse. None of us can afford to allow our own criminals to tug at the foundations.
Sorry its a rant but it is already proverbially 10 minutes to midnight and counting, there are more thoughts here:

At he back of my mind, I have a feeling that different credit card rules apply for gambling "debts of honour" ? Any idea what they are ?0 -

Just a thought, would it be an idea to scratch the 3 digit security number off the back of your cards (after memorising it of course)?"We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
Got a phone call from Halifax this morning asking if I purchased £1.50 worth of public transport ticket in Stockport 10 minutes earlier and was I about to do £150 worth of clothes shopping online. Halifax felt "it didn't match my shopping and travel pattern". "No" I replied truthfully, being 198 miles from Stockport and being more of a Primark shooper, than "£150 in one go" sportswear splasher.
No spyware on my PC, no risky purchases this year. Bought some petrol in a local Total petrol station in Medway and the only people in Stockport I know were solicitors dealing with my re-mortgage 4 months ago. Either they should invest in shredding machine or I should start re-fueling in different garage.0 -
mr_nick wrote:i think if everyone shredded their bank statements and till receipts etc rather than putting them in the bin, they'd be a lot fewer fraudulant transactions!
(PS you can still recycle shredded paper:) ...)
I know this isn't really the topic of this thread - but - many local authorities don't accept shredded paper for recycling - apparently it jams the automatic sorting machines.0 -

You could compost it yourself I believe."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
