  • Most towns will now have pupil referal units or centres which will specifically take pregnant students, so technically they don't ask you to leave as much as recommend the alternative as a safer environment. It is a health and safety thing but also a knee jerk reaction to the fear that one girl getting pregnant may lead to others with self-esteem issues getting themselves pregnant for attention too. (It does happen in some places... certainly didn't with my school, it was a catholic school and you'd have thought I had the plague the way my "friends" suddenly had to keep away from me at their parents requests) I think in some ways the referal centres are a nicer environment for pregnant teens as they will be around other girls facing the same issues and more support.

I would say if she is staying off school for now can you contact the school and get notes or work sent home for her? If she is keen to continue her education then falling behind would be a bad thing as with tiredness and over-emotionalness from being pregnant are a bad combination with stress of having to catch up and the last thing you want is her feeling overwhelmed and deciding she can't achieve at school as well.

  • One thing that I did wonder was would it be possible to homeschool her - at least for now. I just don't know how well she will do at school.

I home school our 13 year old and by age 11+ I'd actually say it's fairly straight forward to do, especially with keen learners as they're quite self-directing in study.

Ah yes, the hypocrisy of the Catholic school. Tell them contraception is a sin, tell them abortion is a sin, then tell them they're sinful harlots when they get pregnant and keep the baby!

That is not what happened at my Catholic school at all. One girl in my year got pregnant in year 10, as did others in the years above. Those who had their children were supported and accommodated throughout their pregnancies and after birth.

It may well be that some schools (Catholic or not) feel unable to accommodate young mothers for a variety of reasons and feel that the girl's interests are better served at a special unit.

You can't make a blanket statement about Catholic schools based on a handful of experiences.

That would rather depend on whether you're capable of it. Her education only takes up a few short years but it has to last her the rest of her life.

Before all of this, she spent a lot of her time studying. She actually likes to sit and do her home work, get a book and study. I think it would work better for her, if possible.

Would you only do it if she goes ahead with the pregnancy, or regardless of her choice in the coming weeks?

I think regardless of her choice. She will need as much support if she goes for abortion, and I think it might work better if she could be at home but still learning. Of course I'll have to talk to her and ask her what she wants.
