My partner and I downloaded the initial letter and sent it, along with a cheque for £10 to our banks head office well over a month ago but as yet, we still havent heard anything. Anybody got any advice about what I do in this situation? Its REALLY frustrating! Thanks
I am also STILL waiting for my charges. Sent letters off to three different banks. Not one of them has got back to me. My cheques haven't been cashed either?!0 -

I Do Not Know The Number Of That Account Held Prior To Aug 05, I Do Know That I Opened That Account In 2001. Because I Dont Have The Number, The Bank (nat West) Wont Let Me Have My Statements! I Have Been Trying Since Dec 2006 To Get These Statements, To No Avail. Should I Estimate The Charges Based On The Statements I Do Have? I Am Certain That The Charges Since Aug 05 Month For Month Are Less Than They Would Have Been Between 2001 And Aug 05. Would Really Appreciate Some Help, Thanks, James.
I had a problem with Capital One claiming not to be able to trace an old account without an account number. I had already supplied them with the usual details such as full name and address with postcode, date of birth, type of account and approximate dates of opening/closure.
After receiving the email stating this I didnt know what to do and decided to use this free service online by the British Bankers Association to trace dormant accounts:
http://www.bba.org.uk/bba/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=144
Thanks to Martin recommending the site in a recent MSE email
Co-incidentally a week later I received an email from the bank saying they had traced my account and were sending the details, which I duly received. I would not like to state that this service prompted the miraculous resurrection of my account from archived material but it may have helped. Until now all I have received is a letter confirming that the BBA are communicating with the bank about it. Perhaps the receipt from this association of investigative correspondence helped them along. Either way, had they not responded then the service would have done the job too.
I would strongly advise against estimating your charges as you will need proof of everything you claim for. You can always claim for the charges you do have proof of but be wary of the terms for settlement from the bank. Do not sign to say you will accept future charges or will not reclaim in future. Good luck0 -
No, our cheque hasn't been taken out either. Their obviously trying to avoid us!!0

I've been waiting for nearly 4 weeks too for my statements - I think I either sent it to wrong branch or they are stalling!0

Hi all.
Sorry for long description but best to know everything. All responses appreciated. I am deffo going to share all my experiences when I get my charges!
I have followed Martin's instructions and researched the site so things should be going swimmingly except....
I am trying to claim back well over a grand of bank charges from the Halifax.
1) I sent my first letter with £10 on 21st Feb. to the Data Protection manager as per Martin's instructions. It was not recorded delivery.
2) I had no reply so I called into the branch and phoned the Data Protection dept. There was a recorded message for an answer that asked me to leave my details and they would call me back.
3) Still no answer so I reported to my branch and a note was put on the system.
4) After researching on this site, I wrote a warning letter, with my original letter copied in, to say that I would report as a breach to the data protection people if they didn't respond in 7 days. This letter was sent recorded delivery.
5) Today is Tuesday. On Friday it will be up and I have had no answer. Should I just make a complaint and does it work?
Any answers appreciated and thanks so much anyone.0 -
Obviously the most frustrating part of reclaiming as everyone just want to get started to their claim.
The only advice I can offer is send the letter by Rex_Mundi, linked previously in this thread and keep badgering your bank daily until you get the statements.
Do report to the ICO as well.0 -

Hi
Can I ask some advice please, I sent the Clydesdale Bank the first step letter with my cheque enclosed. They have sent me back a letter stating ' due to the high volume of demand in relation to this high profile issue, they reqret that they are not yet able to provide me with the information requested"
Then they go on to say that I am within my rights to contact the information commissioner, but they will prvide the information as soon as they possible can.
What do I do, do I give them the benefit of the doubt or do I go to the Information Commissioner? If I should go to the Information Commissioner how do I do that?
Many thanks
