Hi

Am very new to all this!!!!!

I have just bought a new house and the heating is LPG it seems to be a minefield....does anyone have any tips or advice

Whatever you do, don't just sign the paperwork that your supplier will send with out checking it out in detail. We moved into a cottage in wales with LPG, and signed the forms and sent off the direct debit to then find that we had locked into a 5 year contract!
It seems to be harder to find comparisons of lpg, in fact I haven't found one price comparison site yet includes them. Don't be afraid to negotiate a new price though, based on staying with them, I have done that before and saved several pence per litre.
If you have better luck, please let me know!

I have been on LPG for 14 years and it come as a shock when we moved here. You don't say if it's bottled or cylinder gas you are using. If it is bottled my best advice is to phone every one in your yellow pages because from actual experience prices can and do vary greatly, even with the same branded names. Make sure you tell whoever you are getting a price from that it is for your domestic hot water and heating, the price drops dramatically for this. Also most suppliers will give an even cheaper price if you pay COD. I agree with an earlier post, I find flogas at the moment the cheapest, I have 2 X 47kg bottles delivered at a time at a cost of £57 ( for the two, not each). 2 bottles, summer usage, if you can call this summer seems to last forever. However when winter arrives and the management goes into hibernation, ( she is a cold one), 2 bottles last about a week to 10 days. We live in a bungalow with 7 radiators, two of which are huge!. I guess if you take the cost over a year, its not so bad. My biggest gripe is the 5% vat slapped on it, and the way the suppliers always seem to have a price rise come the winter. After all the gas they supply to you costs them just a few pence and is a waste by product from oil exploration!.Hope it helps. In Lincolnshire I can get 2 x 47kg propane for £59.58 from Flowgas and £57.56 from Calor. Flogas will match the Calor price but won't undercut.

Interesting to see Calor cheaper out your way. Its always the other way round here. I prefer Flowgas anyway, there staff always seem to be more helpful. Calor always make you feel as though they are doing you a favour by selling you their gas, and can never tell you when it will be delivered, even though they have regular 'routes'. Its always 'we are short staffed this week, we'll get it to you as soon as we can'!.

Plus , here anyway, Flowgas do not charge you a 'hire fee' for the bottles. Calor do, and of course you never get that back.

You can get it back if you return them under a year

and start again,you would normally do this if you use enough,its just nobody asks.

you need to keep the original reciept though.

Propane Gas (LPG)

is a commodity they say it isnt but it is,the dollar as its bought in dollars and the demand for Propane throughout the world,middle east tensions etc all make the gas price increase.
the lull between oil and gas Increasing is usually about 3 months,some companies carry the cost to even out prices.
Others raise it straight away.
Good advice is to have a large tank and get it filled in the summer or have a telemetry device fitted,the main players can fit it for you (free if your nice)
and they only come when tank is low and with your permission.
a 2000 litre seems to do the job nicely or get a underground one.

Need help for pensioner who has heating and hot water running on lpg supplied by a company called flogas at 29.5p per unit. Her direct debit is £86 per month which is no longer affordable. As we live in a rural area mains gas is not an option.
This lady worked until she was 68 and can still not afford to keep warm in the winter!

If she gets any means tested benefit (e.g. pension credit) then she should qualify for a "warmfront" grant to cover the cost of a new (cheaper to run or more efficient) heating system.

Since LPG is an expensive way to heat a house changing to oil (or even all electric using the powergen staywarm tariff for the over 60's) might be a better long term solution.
