Suggestions for defining what is a regular.
Think we could go along the lines of this, which would enable us to then compile a list of what is (selected by over 50% of voters) AND what isn't a regular (not selected by over 50% of voters). There is a linked example for each type. I think I've picked the correct examples but let me know if not.
What type of competition do you consider to be a regular (tick all that apply).
(eg which comps should be posted as a regularly updated thread rather than an individual thread each d/w/m NOT what should be posted on the regulars board that will be dealt with in a separate poll)- Nothing I think all competitions should be posted with a brand new thread each day/week/month even if the URL and prize remain the same.
- Daily - one prize a day (no new questions)
- Daily - enter multiple times, one prize.
- One day a week, every week comps
- Same URL, same prize, no new answers needed
- Same URL, prize can change, no new answers needed
- Same URL, prize can change, new answers may be required
- Same company, same prize, URL/answers may vary
- Same company, prize/URL/answers may vary
I don't know if we'd need to run this poll twice - for end date regulars and ongoing regulars? To me I'd rather have the same definition for both. But if others feel different then it's only one more question I guess.......
Guess you could split the last ones into being asked individually by d/w/m? But the where to post regulars may cover that off?
Other option is run this poll first, define that we are asking which types of comp should be posted with regularly updated threads rather than individual threads each time, split the examples into d/w/m each and then anything that gets greater than 50% of the poll could have asked of it, eg where do you think this should be posted if it has no end date...regs or main (and/or anything else).0 -
Suggestions for defining what is a regular.
What type of competition do you consider to be a regular (tick all that apply).
Only two types of comps:
Daily - one prize a day (no new questions)
Daily - enter multiple times, one prize.
All others - main board:
Daily - one prize a day, different questions (all in one thread... not seperate threads)
Weekly - bumped once a week (one thread)
Monthly - new post for each comp (as it only works out as 12 threads a year)0 -
re running polls - I think a week for each poll is fair, most compers will log in at least once during a week and we should see a fair representation of the boards users in the results
however the more polls that are run the longer all thiw will take
I think we can take the result of Andrea's first poll 'all reg entry comps with an end date to be posted on the main board' as what most compers wanted and stick with it
so the poll needs to decide how you define a comp as having an end date or not, then either have more than one poll with only 2 choices or one poll with multiple choices where the choice with the lowest vote is removed until there are only 2 to choose from
Hi Glad. Quick question - can MSE polls be run with multiple choice?
I wonder whether we'd be better running a poll in Surveymonkey or something similar so all the questions can go on in one go. If needed we could have disclaimers on some of the questions saying the result of this poll may be invalid depending on the result of question x,y,z?
One-Eye, you seem to know a lot more about polls than me, could that work? Or do we have to run all the polls individually a week at a time so people know exactly what they're being asked?0 -
Regular threads to be "hidden" (yes, yes... we all know it's not hidden...) in the regular forum?
Only two types of comps:
Daily - one prize a day (no new questions)
Daily - enter multiple times, one prize.
All others - main board:
Daily - one prize a day, different questions (all in one thread... not seperate threads)

Monthly - new post for each comp (as it only works out as 12 threads a year)
Thanks I'll go looking for examples and add them to my list.
We're not really trying to resolve the where with this more the what....the where is being covered by other questions0 -

yes polls can be run so people can choose more than one option
and we could have more than one poll running if need be
I think they should probably be run on MSE if possible
timewise, I'm hoping that a week of thrashing things out here could end up with you having a clearer idea of what you want and therefore simpler poll optionsI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Can I ask what is happening to the comps that are only open for one day?
I am thinking for example, of the Facebook comp which opens on a Tuesday morning and finishes the same day at midnight.
It is called Tie Rack Tuesday.
Would it help if the comps that are only open for 24 hours (or less) were posted with 'TODAY' in the title ?
...as well as the end date.0 -

re a sub forum for more discussion threads - I can put it to the team but looking at the MSE forum as a whole I think it's unlikely, it's only relatively recently that one chat thread has been allowed on each board, allowing one board to have it's own sub section for chat threads could lead to other boards wanting the same and that would be a massive change to what is really a moneysaving forum, whereas sites like Loquax which does have more chat/question forums are devoted just to comping
maybe people could give some thoughts to other ways the board could be used so there is always a way people get their questions answered
eg the Inn and Disc threads being closed and renewed once a week or after every 1000 posts
having a FAQ sticky as an open thread people used just to ask and answer questions (this could also be closed after so many posts with the FAQ OP updated to include anything you think is needed that has come up in the previous thread)
maybe if we use this thread to discuss solving what comps people want on mains v regs first, then move on to other problems in turn, each problem will get it's turn and hopefully a solution

I f we can have more than one option on the polls then we may well be able to have far less polls.
In regard to a chat section, this may be our only chance to propose one, as I have never seen us get the chance to debate and discuss things so much in the past.
I am not suggesting starting another sub-forum, but just tweaking the description of an existing sub forum, to enable compers to feel that finally they have the right too join in more fully - even if they are never able to find a new comp to post.
I think the big difference to the Comps section in regard to the other section of MSE is that we are different, which has been said many times. We are not directly involved with money saving, but more like a possible money bonus if you are lucky enough to win anything..
In most other MSE section threads are not posted, with the specific intent that no one ever posts on them again, unless its to update a Q or convey information about the comps. Yet we are allowed multiple threads in IWIW and allowed to post on them, and there are threads in GO from donkeys years ago...
Yes shorter threads for Comps Disc and the Inn may help but only a little, and I imagine it would end up with the same relatively small number of compers posting on them in comparison to the amount of members comping.
While we are lookin at the Regs board in such detail, means this is an ideal time to tweak the description further, esp as MSE Andrea has asked us to say what would work best for us on this board. Plus making the board more user friendly and attractive to compers, would mean more people using it.
After all, no one has ever said that IWIW is hidden away from the rest of the comps forumMy light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

That's the sort of thread I think should have a title like "E: 99/99 Tie Rack prize - Tuesdays only. FB", placed on the main board, and bumped once a week (Tuesdays when the comp is up and running), and kept on the main board.
While I love the title idea, this is very similar to how it would described up on the Dailys Sticky thread.
Comps forum is very different to most of the other board. Lots of compers would not spot a thread that is bumped, as they are entering comps/using the forum in a different display/search manner, so would not see the default front page, in the small time window that a bumped comp would be showing up on it.
We may have 100s of new comp threads posted every day, so the first page lifespan is very brief for most of them.My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

No problems with discussing extra chat threads but lets do it as a separate discussion after the main v regs issue is solvedI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards.
