Please dont go mad at me, just making a few comments for concideration then hiding back in the corner.
Maybe things need looking at in a simpler way. Over complicating things seems to cause more discourse.
How does the game over system work? Maybe make sure threads dont actually get moved until midnight on the day competitions end.
So those who search by end date can search that particular day - and be able to catch the said twitter/facebook/newly added last minuite competitions before they get moved.
The compilations of dailies (as an example - as its the only one I have used recently) has become a full on mission to update and keep on top of from what I can see - as there is simply LOADS of them. I guess anything that eases the pressure and 'workload' of anyone working on updating and maintaining these threads would be a very good place to start.
There have been some weekly / monthly regs posted on the main board - with links to the regs board/thread.
Without these being on the main board I would have missed them. I liked this change.
I comp by searching end date, entering comps usually 2/3 days in front then checking current and next day daily.
I have been here since Aug 2010 - if its relevant or helps at all.
xx
We won't get mad at you, everyone is entitled and welcome to post ((((())))
BGs move comps to GO, and when they have the time to do that.
I also comp by end date, but try to be a few days in front (failing miserably atm ) - so miss any comps posted which are live for only 24-48ish hours
The Daily thread has become an amazing helpful sticky for me. There are so many sub sections now, and its highlighted by colours when a new comp is added, that its quicker for me to check that than to run 6 different searches.
I know people are using many more title tags now, but I actually use them to speed read and find out which threads I want to open to enter from, rather than use them as search aid to find comps to enter. My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly
Our Precious Baby Tianna has now joined our Family, she is much loved and very welcome, xxx0 -
re moving to GO Andrea has asked BG's and (I think) posted somewhere that she agrees comps should only be moved to GO after they are finishedI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. I also use the title tags to skim comps, and really like how these are highlighting purch ness, daily, blog, twitter etc..Wishing you all good luck!

If we want polls where an absolute majority (ie over 50%) has voted in favour of the winning solution then the only way is to have JUST TWO OPTIONS in any vote. My suggestion is below. I have used daily competitions in the wording, but a similar process with slightly different questions could be applied to weeklies and monthlies. It might look complex, but go through it stage by stage and you will see that each question in itself is simple and (hopefully) gets us toward a definitive answer.
I agree with you re: only having 2 options. The only one I feel needs more is the define a regular one. But I think that one should allow multiple selections. So then if we can log the number of voters and see the number of votes each option has then we could say that only the options selected by 50% or more of the people are the ones that we use in the rules....
I do think that your suggested polls may be too much for people though - to cover the 3 types of regular that would be 12 polls, and there would have to be a few others too for the other things that need sorting.
Yesterday I suggested 5 polls that I think cover everything off in less polls? For the people who gave up on my post due to it's length they were:
1) Where should ongoing regulars get posted
(options: Regulars or Main)
(if on main we need to agree how to do this eg your E: 99/99 proposal)
2) What is a regular
(multiple options can be selected. Those selected by over 50% of voters become what a regular is)
3) How do we post dailies
(options: thread each day or ongoing thread)
4) How do we post weeklies
(options: thread each week or ongoing thread)
5) How do we post monthlies
(options: thread each month or ongoing thread)
Looking at your poll suggestions maybe 3-5 should apply to comps that are not ongoing comps and it also needs
6) How do we post ongoing dailies
(options: thread each day or ongoing thread)
7) How do we post ongoing weeklies
(options: thread each week or ongoing thread)
8) How do we post ongoing monthlies
(options: thread each month or ongoing thread)
9) What is your definition of an ongoing competition?
(options: any with no end date from the same site even if the prize, answer, etc changes or only those with no end date where the prize, answer, etc stay fixed)
But still less polls...0 -
Just a thought on "game over" It doesn't matter if comps are moved a day or two after they have finished, but it makes a difference if they are moved too soon, as people miss them. I know BGs move them when they have time, but can they not ignore the ones that finish that day, and just move the previous days ones? or am I being naive.0

a) You've missed out a "where" question (or 3 questions) for regulars where the promotion has an end date.
b) You don't allow for different answers for daily/monthly/weekly in question 1.
c) You don't allow for different treatment of an ongoing reg that has the same Question/Answer/Link/Prize to one that has a different Q/A/L/P each time.
d) You could get nonsense results eg. a combination of Q1 and Q6 could give a new thread each day on regulars, and if Q3 said ongoing thread then that is just confusion.
The tests for a potential set of questions are:-
1) Can your favoured solution be arrived at by voting a certain way.
2) Are all possible combinations of results sensible and practical.
3) Do we have over 50% voting for the winning solution.0 -
I mentioned in post #35 the five possible results from my suggested polls on dailies. These were B, AC, ADE, ADFG or ADFH. I really want to know if anybody’s favoured solution is not covered, so I will list these five individually:-
Post the comp as an individual thread each day (on main) for that day only. No link is needed in the daily sticky so it becomes redundant.
AC) Post ALL daily regular comps in a single thread on main for the duration of the promotion. New posts can be added to this thread for any new Questions/ Answers/ Links/ Prizes. Post a link to the thread in the daily sticky. Promotions with a fixed duration have a real end date. Ongoing promotions have a made up end date, and the thread is periodically renewed.
ADE) Post all daily regular comps in a single thread for the duration of the promotion on regulars. Any posted on main will be moved. New posts can be added to this thread for any new Questions/ Answers/ Links/ Prizes. Post a link to the thread in the daily sticky.
ADFG) Post a daily regular comp in a single thread for the duration of the promotion. New posts can be added to this thread for any new Questions/ Answers/ Links/ Prizes. Post a link to the thread in the daily sticky. Post daily regular promotions with a fixed duration with the real end date on main. Post ongoing promotions on regulars including any that need new Questions/ Answers/ Links/ Prizes.
ADFH) Post a daily regular comp in a single thread for the duration of the promotion. New posts can be added to this thread for any new Questions/ Answers/ Links/ Prizes. Post a link to the thread in the daily sticky. Post daily regular promotions with a fixed duration with the real end date on main. Post ongoing promotions that need new Questions/Answers or Links or Prizes (ie. those requiring a post each day) on main with a made up end date. Post on regulars only those ongoing promotions where the Question/Answer and Link and Prize stay fixed.
I suppose that the ‘B’ solution for dailies seems to be universally hated and really fails the ‘sensible solution’ test, but it was Andrea’s proposal from the 10th so maybe it has to be included. It is a valid solution for weeklies and monthlies. As regards the other four, my favoured solution is there and two of the others I would be fairly happy with. The one I dislike most is not that bad and I could work with it – especially if over 50% of voters had chosen it.0 -
But can we please, please, please get a comp discussion subforum? If things are gonna be shifted about a bit, I would really, really love this... more than I'd love all comps to be posted on the main board infact... lol! See example on how it works http://comp.forumotion.co.uk/f12-competition-forum Under "This & That", "Comp discussions".
E: 99/99 proposal: Great idea!!! Then it can just be pressed expire if it's no longer running.
If a poll comes up... how long is it gonna be running for? I think last time it was only up for a short period of time... I cannot remember seeing it until it was closed.0 -

I missed the "where" deliberately because I thought that was the one thing that had been clearly resolved in the last poll.....comps with an end date go on main whether they are regular or not.
My comments were just a quickly put together work in progress example of how we could maybe reduce the number of questions a bit and simplify the wording for people. They weren't a final version.
I think if we have a different definition of ongoing for daily, weekly and monthly it will get really confusing when it comes to posting comps. The rules we make need to be complete but also need to be as simple as possible. The more variables we throw in the more confusing it will be to work with. Just my humble opinion though0 -
re a sub forum for more discussion threads - I can put it to the team but looking at the MSE forum as a whole I think it's unlikely, it's only relatively recently that one chat thread has been allowed on each board, allowing one board to have it's own sub section for chat threads could lead to other boards wanting the same and that would be a massive change to what is really a moneysaving forum, whereas sites like Loquax which does have more chat/question forums are devoted just to comping
maybe people could give some thoughts to other ways the board could be used so there is always a way people get their questions answered
eg the Inn and Disc threads being closed and renewed once a week or after every 1000 posts
having a FAQ sticky as an open thread people used just to ask and answer questions (this could also be closed after so many posts with the FAQ OP updated to include anything you think is needed that has come up in the previous thread)
maybe if we use this thread to discuss solving what comps people want on mains v regs first, then move on to other problems in turn, each problem will get it's turn and hopefully a solution
re running polls - I think a week for each poll is fair, most compers will log in at least once during a week and we should see a fair representation of the boards users in the results
however the more polls that are run the longer all thiw will take
I think we can take the result of Andrea's first poll 'all reg entry comps with an end date to be posted on the main board' as what most compers wanted and stick with it
so the poll needs to decide how you define a comp as having an end date or not, then either have more than one poll with only 2 choices or one poll with multiple choices where the choice with the lowest vote is removed until there are only 2 to choose fromI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards.
