When I applied for my provisional licence, I was sent a highway code with the "starter pack." I read the code and re-visited when things changed. In the book, it pointed out that laws change and I should renew it periodically. The first time I had to drive a van, I researched what the laws were and discovered the different speed limits. I can't see how difficult that would be for anyone.

When did you get your licence?

I was never given a highway code and was certainly never give a "Starter Pack".

I have also never been told I should check the highway code for updates and to refresh at all either thats why I am saying this should be done.

But your right and we dont have a problem with people not knowing the laws are different. The goverment are perfect and do a great job at everything they do.

    See Highway Code here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070304

As a goods vehicle you can only do 50mph in a 60mph limit single carriageway road and 60mph on a dual carriageway.

Fkinell, I have been tearing it up for years in vans not even aware of that rule. It seems I have been very lucky.

You were sent one with your first licence.

As a driver you have responsibility to keep updated, you cannot blame anyone else if you choose not to.

Pretty sure I was not, but it was along time ago so maybe I am wrong on this then.

I actually agree with you but thats not the mentality 99% of driver have though is it? Which is maybe something the goverment need to address.

Most people pass there test and assume that it they done whats needed and dont ever look at the highway code ever again, maybe if it was highlighted to people the importance more people would do it is what I am saying.

I personally think the way our licence sytem works is terrible, everybody should have to do a refresher course every so often to make sure that they are still driving at the standard they should be in my opinion.

Look at people who when they passed there test 40-50+ years ago, things have changed totally both the road and the way we are trained to use them, yet they have never had to do anything at all and still drive like they always have or worse.

    I agree, however;

Sadly, no amount of government badgering will make drivers do anything about it.

Just made an edit to my post, adding further to my veiw on this also as I say car and van license should not be the same license IMO.

An your teling me if an advert came on and highlighted a knowen issue such as van speed limits and made people go to themself oh I did not know about that, that some people would not then look into brushing up their knowlage about the highway code?

I am not saying it will totally fix the problem but atleast they are trying to educate people of such issues instead of just going down the same old route of lets just fine everybody and thats enough. Its not enough is it as it is not working.

This I agree with, but that is all it is, a courtesy for better service. The liabilty is still on the driver to be aware of the law under the Road Trafic Act.

Agree with that too and I'm not suggesting anyone is 'bleating on' just saying it is an issue. The vans I have hired have not been limited in any way.

If they can check your license they could simply point it out is all I am saying. They have a sticker in the cab to remind you of the height of the vehicle, why not one to remiind you of the speed limits as well?

I just think it is a major failing that could be easily avoided. I mean, dad has to have a 'no smoking allowed' sign in the cab to remind him not to smoke in his own van. He doesn't smoke and works for himself so he's the only person in it!!!

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Perhaps, as is typical with hire vans, it was fitted with a limiter.

Thanks Flyboy152, more worried about when I was supposed to be doing 50 though, on the return leg I was trying to hit 60 whenever I could. Makes sense it has a limiter, it would fly up to 60 and then stop there!

I'll know for next time though :D
