70mph, its the only type of road they can do that speed on legally.

  • I am amazed how many people who get caught out by this. The A14 is notorious for this kind of thing. The police will sit there all day near cambridge zapping them.
  • Transit/luton type van is 50 single carriageway / 60 on a dual carriageway and 70 on a motorway (60 mph if towing trailer)

Astra type van is 60 single carriageway / 70 on a dual carriageway and 70 on a motorway (60 mph if towing trailer)
  • This law seems madness to me, its been around for ages but yet so many people dont know about it. I only know about it after seeing a different thread on here where someone was caught and was asking for advise.

Seems mad to me that there is a law nobody is taught when going for your license, to be honest I think there should be a seperate test for vans and van laws. There is for trailers now, always has been for bus or lorry, yet anybody with a car license can just jump in a big van and without knowing the different laws that apply.

Its almost like they want us to break the law so they can fine us, bit like speeding. Why have cars that are able to go faster than the speed limit??? Oh thats right so they can make money from it when we do.

Technology we have now means all vehicles made could be fitted with a system where the vehicle knows the locations speed limit and the vehicle is limited to that speed. Problem fixed nobody can speed, but oh thats right then they would not make any money from us all.

The cops love this one because its like shooting fish in a barrel.

It is in fact correct that there are lower speed limits for vans which are NOT car derived vans.

So for instance..if you have a Ford Fiesta van,it is a car derived van and car speed limits apply

If you have a Ford Transit,it is a purpose built van,not car derived, and is subject to the lower limits.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Had to check that, Anything van over 2 tons. I always thought it the same with rigid goods vehicles and coaches.

Take one rigid goods vehicle limited to 56mph and not allowed in the 3rd lane of a 3 lane motorway. Fit some windows
and seats add 60 children and a few adults. Now you (could) do 70 and use the 3rd lane.

    UTTERLY MENTAL...

Bus/Coaches should have been limited to 56.

Except you can't do 70 or use the 3rd lane in a bus or coach.

The speed limit might say 70 is the limit but buses are limited to 62mph.
  • Obviously a lot of 7.5 tonne vehicles are restricted but there is still some older ones that will hit 75-80mph.

Yep national speed limit is 50/60 in van not 60/70, utter tosh isn't it.

It depends on what the van is carrying doesn't it really?
And because nobody can see inside a van, they just lay down a blanket restriction.

After seeing a large van up on 2 wheels along the M42 due to side winds and aggressive driving, im afraid I have to agree with the limits.

That's correct, it's totally possible via the CAN bus interface on ALL modern cars. But as mentioned above, this would cut into profits.

There was talk of a plan the fit GPS to all cars in the UK, these would record speeds/locations and then upload to a central server at your yearly MOT..... You'd get all your fines in one go, but with this system most people would lose their license come MOT day, so they considered removing the 3 points part of the fine (yes just making money).
Many people questioned... "Well if you can track cars, why not automatically restrict them to the correct speeds?" would this not eliminate speeding altogether and therefore (according to govt figures) prevent ALL road accidents forvever?
