Speeding ticket in Vito van

Astonishing stuff!!!
I hired a Luton van last week to move house and really just observed the signs without knowing about further restrictions. Think I got away with it as luckily the van was a bit worse for wear so wouldn't do much more than 60 on a dual carriage way anyway.
I'm a bit surprised I wasn't asked if I knew about these restrictions when I picked the van up really as I was very clear with them that I hadn't driven a Luton before.
Can fixed cameras catch you for this or is it just mobile units?0 -
Twaddle. What a perfect person you must be going round with the rules for everything in your hand!
I don't, but if I am caught doing somethoing wrong, I say, "it's a fare cop, guv'" and I don't bleat on about it.Car/Van rental firms are often the same place. People often won't realise the rules are different and it wouldn't cross their mind to have to check because their license allows them to drive one.
Different rules, one has to present ones licence to the hire firm first, the onus is also on them to check the driver is entitled to drive that class of vehicle. While I understand what you are saying I feel the companies themselves could take 30 seconds to ask the question! Better service.
This I agree with, but that is all it is, a courtesy for better service. The liabilty is still on the driver to be aware of the law under the Road Trafic Act.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
No, just fairly recently, in fact.
That is a question for the libertists, don't you think? I have no idea why they would want to track me, it doesn't make sense to me that they would want to at all, but it doesn't mean that they won't.
As with cars.
Sorry, but that is exactly what it looks like you are doing. You are implying taht drivers should be allowed to get away with being ignorant of the law.
How do you think speeding drivers should be punished.
We campaigned for eighteen months to have on installed on the approach road to our village. Before, there was at least two collisions a week, now that is down to about six a year. If they are now being dispensed with, it means that they have done theor jobs, don't you think?
What are you actually even reading my posts properly or have you just simpley judged me as you see fit and scanning over them? I have at no point said people sould get away with it and I even agree with speeding fines if you read though what I have posted.
I just think they should be looking at other options that will help along side of fines for situations like this one. End of the day the law was broken and fine is only fair. But surely educating people of these laws so more people actually know about them would work towards helping this problem?
Again dont get why you react to my comment the way you have with the fixed camra comment, yes they do a good job I agree, then why remove them if they have worked is my point? Just means people will start speeding again if they remove them, but they are only moving them as they dont make money off them anymore.
Yet the goverment say thast camras have nothing to do with making money its for safty, well thats not true or they would be keeping them in place surely?0 -

Perhaps, as is typical with hire vans, it was fitted with a limiter. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I am going on the nature and tone of your remarks, relating to drivers, who haven't bother to read the highway code, should be given an advisory chat, before being issued with a ticket. However, your denial that the government has informed drivers of their responsibility, seems to indicate that their indiscretions should be ignored. The government informs each new driver of their responsibilities under the law. they get sent a copy of the highway code. In it, is explained exactly what the law is, as regards speed limits and other aspects of driving. If drivers chose to ignore the rules listed in the code, that is their problem.I just think they should be looking at other options that will help along side of fines for situations like this one.
Such as what?Again dont get why you react to my comment the way you have with the fixed camra comment, yes they do a good job I agree, then why remove them if they have worked is my point?
Because this current government has cut funding to local councils? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Another good point surely it would make senece for there to be a legal document that has to go out with every van hired regarding laws that differ from those of a car to make sure people have been informed and it has to be signed at the bottom. Then if anybody says they did not know well thats their own fault they signed to say they did know about it.0

They do. The terms and conditions state that it is the responsibility of the hirer and other named drivers to be aware of the law as related to the vehicle they are driving. You don't think that people, who can't be bothered to read the highway code, would bother to read any other legal document, do you?The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I was never sent a highway code, ever. I bought one. I never said they should be given an advisory chat, I said that they need to raise awarenes about such laws.
OMG I already said, advert along the lines of vans speed limits, did you know type question and then remind people to go though the highway code now and then.
No it because they dont make money from fixed camras anymore, but you keep beliving in your failed goverment who gives us useless NHS, police service, fire service, refuse disposal service, ect ect the list goes on. Goverment take take take from us and we get nothing back cos they pay them self to well and waste money on pointless things, but you keep on beliving.0 -

That not really very helpful though is it? Most people as proven assume they know the law as they were given the licence and dont know any better.
But your right, I am wrong nothing goverment can do to help these issues and they should simpley just keep doing what they are doing.0 -

When I applied for my provisional licence, I was sent a highway code with the "starter pack." I read the code and re-visited when things changed. In the book, it pointed out that laws change and I should renew it periodically. The first time I had to drive a van, I researched what the laws were and discovered the different speed limits. I can't see how difficult that would be for anyone. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
